Prefered cleaning equipment

Not type of lube or how to…

Just wondering what kits, brands you guys use or recommend to clean your AR’s.

Coated rods?

Bore guides?

I been using a standard aluminum 3 section rod, not sure if thats the best way to go on chrome bores, looking for input on a good overall cleaning kit brandwise.

I know it’s a pretty simple question but sometimes it’s good to cover the basics.

Thanks,

Ken

Boretech rod. Any rod guide, but use something. Sinclair cleaning link which holds upper at an angle. MTM cradle. Sinclair barrel extension cleaning tool. Sinclair upper receiver bronze brush. All good stuff, but defintely not field expedient.

I use a boresnake. It cleans the visible gunk away, but up until recently I was using a hoppes 3-piece rod. I just got a teflon coated one piece rod from Pro-Shot. When I picked it up I got the usual patch holder, jag, but I also picked up a brush labled .22 centerfire. I tried and was I impressed, it was a very tight fit, much more so than the usual .22 brushes I had been using. This was my first one piece rod, so I’m not a goldmine of info on the matter.

The 3 section rods arent the best thing for a bore. Something better is one of the coated or fiber one piece rods. I prefer the Otis stuff over everything, its portable, you dont need a bore guide. The brushes and all components are 100% brass so you dont have to worry about screwing up your weaapon.

Harv’s solution: a USGI .45 cal. cleaning rod and USGI chamber brush.

Now, if I could only find more of the rods (or where I put the last 7 I bought.)

I have the kit that came with the Colt, I like it cause it breaks down to 4 pieces and easy to carry but only would use it to clear a stuck bullet in bore or stubborn case if either ever occurs. The other I have is a 22 rifle kit but not coated and various handgun kits from over the years.

I like the idea of the one piece coated or fiber rod and the MTM holder.

Thanks for the info,

Ken

Dewey coated rod and Lucas bore guide. I would carry one of the compact military kits in the field, but for “at home normal range shooting” the ARs get the same equipment as a bolt gun.

Cleaning link, vise block that fits into mag well, 1 pc. guide rod, Satern bore guide and a Dewey chamber cleaning kit.

I like Dewey type jags that you can wrap your patch around. They get more cloth in contact with the bore and seem to get the job done a little quicker.

Here’s all you need to keep an AR running… (minus the carbon scraber)

No bore snake…
No bore guide
something to clean the chamber
GI tooth brush
Chamber brushes
some old GI T-shirts
Some patches (.30 cal for chamber…5.56mm for bore
and the smarts to use it all…

How are you getting the patches through the bore?

I rarely clean the bore… It’s a 200 meter Minute of man Carbine… I will run Thousands of rds thru the barrel and it will still shoot better then me before I clean the bore.

A clean barrel adds nothing to reliability… but a clean chamber does… and most guys can’t shoot for shit with a clean barrel anymore then one with 1500 rds thru it…

10-4. Agreed.

Harv-What’s in the Break Free bottle? It looks empty.

A clean throat can reduce chamer pressure and help prevent popped primers and make your bolt last longer.

It is not necessary to clean it every time but every couple of thousand rounds does not hurt.

Fore ARs I use a Dewey chamber rod (it’s just brass) with Dewey chamber brushes. Bore Snakes for the barrel. Shop rags/paper towels to remove the major crud in the upper receiver. Q-Tips for cleaning out the small stuff. I use Slip2000 725 as the ‘solvent’. About once or twice a year I clean using a Dewey coated rod with the Brownells ‘Special Line’ brushes and a JP bore guide with some Sweets 7.62 and JB bore paste.

As you clearly show, you can never have too many chamber brushes.

Harv,

Greetings. Does that chamber brush handle / holder allow the rod to rotate, or is it fixed so you can “twist” in and twist out of the chamber? If it is fixed, where can I get one like that?

I’ve got a piece of shit handle from a cheap cleaning kit I got way back when and it rotates so I cannot use it properly.
