Aim got in some more 2nd gen G22 glocks. I’m thinking about picking one up since I like the smooth front strap of the 2nd gen, but I wasn’t sure if buying a police trade in is a good idea. Would one of these gun be good to go or do I need to wait until I can afford a new glock?

Most likely possible issues would be minor cosmetic ones: Holster wear in the finish and worn sights. My neighbor and a friend picked up two of these DPD trade-ins and they were in excellent condition. I gave them a once-over (certified Glock Armorer) and they were GTG as-is.
Glock factory in Smyrna will do a free “inspect and upgrade” for you. I took two Gen 1 G19’s in there one day and 40 mins later they gave them back with almost all new internals.
As someone else stated, any issues will be mostly cosmetic for sure. I dunno how other departments are, but unfortunately we only shoot 2 times a year. That’s with the dept. Of course I shoot as much as I can on my own, but people like me who enjoy shooting and training are few and far between at work. If you look at most other peoples duty guns they have been infested with dust bunnies and cobwebs other various things lol.
ETA: My Beretta 92 is an older duty weapon trade in and it’s very nice. Wouldn’t hesitate to pick up another trade in sometime.
My Glock 34 has just over 40K rounds through it (no bullshit) and still functions flawlessly. Recently changed the barrel just for the looks of it 
It does have quite a bit of wear on the slide from different holsters over the years though but it doesnt bother me.
You mean you can just send it off and they will look it over and see if anything needs to be replaced?
Yes. You’ll have to pay for shipping to GA but they’ll do the rest including shipping it back to you. I sent a used G19 to them and they replaced every spring, test fired it, cleaned it and sent it back to me good as new 
More than likely those police trade ins have already been back to Glock before AIM got a hold of them.

Ok, I read a few of the threads where people have less than stellar reports about departments using G22s. Now I’m not sure what to do. I was planning on trading my XD for one of these since I thought a G22 would be an upgrade. So am I likely to get a good G22 from AIM or should I pass for now?

A .40 caliber Glock is a Glock which I wouldn’t buy used.
The reports you read about G22 problems involve FG/R frames. Even then it’s not all of them under all conditions. I wouldn’t balk at a LE surplus non-FG/R G22. I’d take a used one far sooner than I’d take certain other makes NIB.
So, the 2nd gen wouldn’t be affected by this(I know next to nothing about glocks)?
If you like the price go for it. They are great guns and used is a way to save some money and get into a great gun. Is a weapon light important to you? If so you might want to go for a newer G22 with rails. I’ve had both and perfer the Glocks with out the finger grooves, I have huge paws and one of my fingers takes up a grove and a half. The light mount is important to me. $349 is a good price. Are you in the millitary, LE, Corrections, EMS or a Fire Fighter? Last time I bought one the govt. price for a new glock with a Govt. ID was in the neighborhood of $400 from a Glock LE Distributer.

though having it glock armorer approved is kind of a nice thing on an unknown gun.
when yall say “second gen” G22, are we talking finger grooves or not? there wasn’t really a first gen of anything other than the G17 right?
i’d avoid the 2 pin 40 frames… there’s a few out there right?
2nd gen, 1st .40 cal Glocks ever made.
Checkering on the girp but no fingergrooves or rails. 3rd gen has rails and fingergrooves.
1st Gens were mostly 17s with a VERY small amount of 19s.
Ok. Back one more(and hopefully last) time to ask a question. I was just at a local gunshop and found a police trade in G17. I’m thinking it’s a 2nd gen since it lacked finger grooves, but the entire grip and been smoothed out so I’m not sure. Since the grip had been smoothed out someone added grip tape:confused:. I guess this isn’t a big deal, I just wondered if this is detrimental to anything. The gun was in pretty good shape with not a whole lot of finish wear and included functional trijicon night sights. The cost was about $420. Is that an ok deal? I like the fact that the front strap is smooth and the night sights are kind of neat. I’m fairly interested in it since I kind of wanted a 9mm glock, but when new glocks go for about $550 new I can’t decide if this is the way to go.
It sounds like a 1st Generation Glock if the entire grip is smooth. For $130 more I’d get a new glock. The ability to add a weapon light is a Huge plus for self defense!
I went and looked for some 1st gen pictures and that sound like what I was looking at.
