I am very curious as to how this looks. I am sending in my form 1 soon and will be SBR’ing my LMT defender 2000 lower with an LMT 10.5" upper. I was wondering if someone with an LMT 10.5", with the standard FSB, and a KX3 could post pics?
It really is a personal preference. There’s no arguing that the KX3 works, it’s just that some people don’t feel it’s necessary. Some people like them, and some people are passionately opposed to them. Some people find short barrels with traditional flash suppressors rather obnoxious, and some people don’t mind.
I like the KX3, and I don’t find the extra weight that big of a deal. The main reason I chose it is that the place where I do most of my shooting has a roof over the firing line. It’s a metal roof on a wooden frame, so anything with a pronounced muzzle blast (like a 10.5" AR or a 16" .308) reverberates off that roof and feels like a slap in the face. If I shot out in the open more often, I might not feel the need for the KX3. Note that it doesn’t do much of anything in terms of flash suppression (the fire-breathing pig is on there for a reason!) but it does a great job of directing the blast forward, away from the shooter and anyone around him. Although it’s an unscientific analysis, to me a 10.5" barrel with a KX3 on it sounds like a 16" carbine with an A2 on it. The KX3 also boosts back pressure, which can help with reliability. My budget requires that I shoot a lot of commercial .223 ammo, and seeing how the LMT uppers are designed to run on NATO-spec 5.56 ammo the extra help from the KX3 certainly pays off - especially when the gun is dirty. Mine even shoots reliably with Wolf, which I’m not too vain to admit I use from time to time.
I hope to replace it with a sound suppressor sometime this year, but all in all I have nothing but good things to say about the KX3. If you have any doubts, I’d say just shoot your upper with the A2 on there and see how it runs. If it cycles reliably and you don’t find it too loud, leave the A2 on there. If you have issues or it gives you a headache try a KX3.
