Overtorqueing Barrel Nut? Should I be worried?

I was installing JAG SFH today.

So initially you are supposed to turn the barrel nut to the 30 ft/lbs. No problem there.

Please note that I was using a bendy bar torque wrench.

Then you apply a centering jig and turn until it centers. According to the manual I’m not supposed to exceed 50 ft/lbs.

However it was impossible. It just wouldn’t turn. So I ended up using 60 ft/lbs to center it.

It’s all installed fine and all that, but now I’m concerned that I may have over-torqued and may launch the barrel flying if I fire it.

Am I worried too much?

60 won’t bother the receiver or the barrel. Looks like you have a steel barrel nut too. I can’t imagine 60 being anywhere close enough to bother anything.

GI nuts can go 80.

I understand your concerns about the over torque of the barrel. You didn’t do anything wrong and your gun is fine.

60 is perfectly fine. 40-50 is ideal, but you can go well over even the 80 max without damaging anything (not that you should, mind you, I’m just pointing out that you’re well under the maximum, which has a generous safety margin built in). Likely the only reason they say not to go over 50 is it can negatively impact precision.

Did you have the crow’s foot perpendicular to the torque wrench shaft? Like in the video…

Ahhhh I didn’t. I had in line with the foot.

Then you don’t know what the nut is torqued to without doing some measuring.
