Since Craftsman ain’t up to the challenge, anyone with an LMT MRP, or uses torques heads extensively recommend me a much better set to take the 140 foot pounds? I just did a big clean up on my LMT MRP upper, and was about to tighten it down until snap!
INCH pounds, dude…140 INCH pounds (a little over 11.5 ft/lbs).
Catch a Snap-On truck and grab one of their 1/4" drive Inch/Pound torque wrenches and one of their impact-rated 1/4" drive T30 bits (or Harbor Freight for that one) and call it done.
Cheap, but just as effective…get an “L”-shaped T30 wrench, mark the ‘long’ leg at 6" from the center of the ‘short’ leg, snug the screw, then put your index finger on the 6" mark and make one firm pull using only your index finger ‘til just before it starts to hurt. Viola’, done…right at 11.5 - 12 ft/lbs.
This…happened to me last week. I got on LMT website to buy new ones. None in stock so I called LMT and they took care of me and sent two new bolts (had the within 3 days). Great CS!!
Interestingly, I asked LMT if I should order a new wrench. They said no need. Just use a T wrench until the bolts are hand tight and then go 1/4 to 1/2 turn past that. That’s what I did yesterday. It’s nice and tight.
That said i would like to get a new Torque wrench. Looks like there’s a strong leaning toward snap on but I’m just not thrilled about spending $200 for a wrench that I will only use for one purpose (but then I just bought the KAC barrel wrench and URX rail vice).
You’re forgiven. I did the same damn thing when I was installing a short-throw shifter in my wife’s Miata. Stripped a bolt, thought WTF?, and grabbed the installation instructions again. Opps!
A wal mart bit should be able to take the minimal amount of torque you put on that thing. It doesn’t take much force to get it to the correct tightness.
It’s expensive, but I saw others MRP owners that use the Effetto Mariposa, so I did some research and found good reviews. I have it now and it works fine. Maxes out at 141.62 in.lbs.
If you are wanting to buy a quality 1/4 drive torque wrench you are going to be spending some money. I think mine is 30-240 inch pounds and it was close to 250 dollars. Got it off a Mac tool truck. I am at school right now, but will be home after this week. If you need to borrow it pm me.
Thanks everyone. Yes, it was the bolt head that snapped. Actually, it twisted, then snapped. I still don’t think it got to the proper torque.
Here is something else. Last time I did this I torqued it down by hand and feel. Did the 1/4-1/2 turn after hand tightening, and I am pretty sure a little more. I went to loosen the first bolt and it came off pretty easy, which scares me. It was tight, but not that tight. I was having some minor accuracy issues with it (Not getting great groupings) and was wondering if the torque screws might have been loose. The front was, the rear was still tight.
I need to get this thing back up and running by next week as my local ROTC has invited me to help them push 8,000 rounds down.
Well this thread makes me feel better about myself. Although when I did it, I had just installed a new .338 Fed barrel and had everything packed to go to the range.
