I thought that I’d start this one up for anyone interested in mixed martial arts as a sport. It might be helpful to post fight updates for those who miss UFC or Strikeforce events. We can also provide insights as to techniques and a database for local schools.
Most of my experience is in the Charlotte Area and Ft. Benning. I can recommend East Coast Fighter, Fight to Win, Team ROC, Hard Target, and Great Grappling as good places to train in Charlotte.
Around Ft. Benning you have the MAC on post that has open mat in the early AM, lunch and at 1700. I can also endorse the school on Whittlesley Blvd which is coached by Rodrigo Poderoso Souza. Matt Larson’s school in Phoenix City is also good with more of a BJJ emphasis.
Finally, let me say that I do not see JDS having anything for Alistair Overeem.
Looking forward to Barnett v. Cormier. Barnett, IMHO, is an excellent fighter with some brains. Not saying some don’t despise him, just saying I think he has the potential to beat anyone. As long as he doesn’t get caught juicing again.
Really looking forward to open mat tomorrow morning.
I’m also looking forward to the Barnett vs. Cormier fight. Barnett is highly skilled and a technician. Cormier brings world class wrestling paired with speed and good footwork. JDS vs. The Reem should be a very exciting fight.
At one point I had Showtime just to watch SF. Then, I noticed that most of the SF fights were making onto the web in reasonable quality and I had a pending 6 month deployment. So, I cancelled my subscription. I bet those online bootlegs will be a lot harder to find now that Zuffa has acquired SF.
I agree with your assessment of Barnett - great catch wrestling game and plenty of experience.
Me too. We have a 90 min Muay Thai “camp workout” prior to the 2 hr open mat. It’s tough to do both due to family and body recovery as I push 40. However, I still feel kinda guilty if I only go to one.
Drop seoi nage. It only works with a gi (for me)- hence impracticle. It only works 10% of the time (again for me), and I’ve given up my back when it fails. However, it looks GREAT when it works.
Long time lurker here and this is the first topic I feel comfortable posting on.
To answer the “most impractical technique landed”, mine was knocking my opponent out with an elbow to the jaw when he had me in a full mount and tried for a ground-and-pound. Yes, I got damn lucky on that one.
As to the main topic, can anyone recommend a good grappling school in the Omaha area? I’ve studied karate for years and I have a solid grasp on striking, but my ground game consists of me punching my way back to a stand-up fight.
I’m a huge old school pride FC fan…I miss the old Wanderlei Silva matches.
I’ve been in BJJ since i was 17. I have taken a lot of breaks due to my Military Career.
I am only a BJJ Blue belt, but i focused on nogi at other places that didnt have belts. I’ve done a few tournaments like Grapplers quest, and Military combatives tournaments
Im a fan of the Team Quest camp in Gresham,OR. I've trained there and they are a cool bunch of guys.( no i don't know any famous fighters... anyone can go there)
I just moved to a location without a BJJ school of any sorts. I’m thinking of starting a BJJ club and seeing who would show up…
Where are you located I can ask my instructors if they know of anything in your area. They do a lot of overseas and national competition teams and have contacts in a lot of different places.
Well Well…I like Mir getting the shot. He is not someone I’ve ever really been a fan of. After his accident he was kinda a slob but he has really turned that around in a big way. I think given the drive he can be a great contender.
While i admit i USED to be heavy into MMA and living only blocks from Team Quest I was afforded to opportunity to TRAIN with some of the BEST!!
I was never looking to FIGHT but being a former wrestler and grew up around martial arts i flocked to the sport. But after a motorcycle crash then GYM DRAMA i drifted from the sport and scene.
I was sparring Evan Tanner and TRIED this flying superman punch form 8 feet (WAY out of his reach and mine) and i sooo thought i had him!!!
Then i remember smelling ammonia with zero clue where i even was!!
So “ridiculous” YES, “impractical” well no not if it had worked like it did in my brain… lol
“coolest” NOT for me! lol but in a way yes it was one of the most memorable because Evan felt sooo bad he took me to lunch at Guiseppe’s Italian Restaurant down the street and we shared some great laugh’s
One thing i will say about that dude… He was one of the most classiest and humble guy’s i EVER met in the sport. he passed away few months later
I’m just starting to get back into WATCHING the sport and seems some pretty good new talent that’s going to be fun to watch and see how they progress.
Mir has definitely picked-up his game over the past couple of years since his loss to Carwin. Any man who KO’s CroCop and snaps Big Nog’s arm deserves a title shot in my book.
However, I think that he need get the fight on the ground fast. He’ll loose if he tries to trade punches with JDS.
Wow. Cormier took the Strikeforce Grand Prix tourney final tonight over Barnett! I’m very impressed with this guy. It will be very interesting to see where he goes from here. Did anybody get to see the fight? The articles make it sound rather one sided (with a broken hand even).
