NOVA Ranges 2024 - a fresh perspective

Hey there NOVA - thought it would be good to revitalize the old link but this really needs to be a new post and not something to scroll through to find a post in the current decade.

With that said, we need more “modern” and current info for our community then what google can provide. With the fall of Blue Ridge/Whatever “fish” during covid and Elite sold off a year ago, choices are limited. Xcal is a newer players and there is some scuttle of a new range in Tysons coming soon. I thought we can bring a 2024 perspective on ranges to the area since there has been changes.

Lets here about a range you frequent and some of the good/bad/whatever folks should know about.

So - I will go first:

NRA Range in Fairfax.

Good: Nice indoor 50 yard range. Allows rifles, shotguns (no small shot, 00 and slugs only). Allows firing from the draw. Well lit, nice waiting area with basic amenities. Friendly and helpful staff(Not the Range Nazi’s of a decade ago). Lots of parking.

Not great: Limited range gear to buy. Limited hours of operation (based on limited staff/RSOs. Must keep target centered due to length of range(dont want shots off the floor or into ceiling). No Full Auto or Black powder allowed and…No coffee bar

Fairfax Rod and Gun Club
(Private club, hosts public matches)
Manassas, VA

Good:
-Multiple outdoor pistol/rifle ranges
-Ranges from 50yd to 300yds for rifle
-Ranges from 0-50 for pistol
-Dedicated pistol ranges with plate racks
-Hanging steel range at 200 meters
-Lots of public matches ranging from IDPA to 2–Gun to NRA Hi-power etc
-Pro shop and restaurant on site
-Very clean porta potties throughout facility
-Campground and lake on site

Bad:
-No drawing from holster (unless at a match or a member at the dedicated “action pistol bay”)

-Targets are in lanes and can only be setup at pre-determined ranges
