Just picked this up the other day - a Plain-Jane M590A1 with 20 inch barrel. This should fill my HD requirement, although the full length heavy barrel is kind of a beast. Probably will only add a sling of some sort. A heat shield would look cool, but is probably not all that useful, and A1 heat shields seem to be hard to come by.
Mossberg’s website advertises this as a new product, but would a plain vanilla A1 really be all that new?
Looks just like mine except I have ghost ring sights.
Hmm are sure it is a heavy barrel didn’t know that HB came with aperture sights?
The butt stock is really long on thoseI am 6’/ 2’’ and its long on me:laugh:
Very nice, now you get to “play Barbie” after you find out all the extra items you “need” from this site.
Regarding it being a new item, I believe Mossberg either offers two similar products with slightly different Product #'s or they’ve recently changed those numbers.
For example, you can find Mossberg 590A1s listed in their standard line as MOG51411 while in their law enforcement/military line listed as UZM51411. Either one is an 18.5" with metal trigger group, safety, and heavy-walled barrel. I’m not aware if there’s actually a difference other than the numbers so hopefully someone here can educate us.
Congrats on your new purchase and pics are always appreciated.
This is the model with the heavy-walled barrel, bead sights, and Parkerized finish (don’t all A1’s have the heavy barrel?). I would imagine that the Ghost-Ring sighted variant probably is a better seller.
Hmm guess it is. It seems I remember reading that the GR sight model didn’t have heavy barrel. I could be wrong on that but the profiles look real close.
Any way enjoy you new shotgun. I like mine.
I swaped my 590’s OEM stock for the Hogue Youth stock which takes the LOP down by 2". I was amazed at how the gun with it’s 20" barrel handled after I installed the shorter length stock.
I did’nt like the feel of the youth stock so I got the standard length hogue also. I intend to spend some range time with the shorter stock to see if it grows on me.
as far as changing stocks, I recommend looking at some of the Speedfeed stocks, they are available with and without additional ammo, several lengths, camo and a separated pistol grip design. http://www.speedfeedinc.com/productsmain.html
Slater congradulatios on the new shotgun. I’m preety sure the model you have is marked as new is they were previously only sold to LE Distributors. Now they are offering them to a broader dealer base.
Additions?
Ammo, #9, 00, slugs, reduced or standard recoil.
Training
Short stock. I use factory stocks cut down with a Limbsaver Speed Mount pad to give a 13" LOP others prefer 12". I have seen a 13" Speedfeed listed by Mossberg on their NYPD shotguns and have also seen 13" Houges.
Big dot sight or other trinium bead.
3 Gun Gear sidesaddle.
A light system. Several ways it could be done, but that’s a thread unto itself.
I just got my 3 gun gear side saddle in last weekend. It is very well made and the material is quite thick. Ive been practicing reloads with it and I like the slightly rearward can’t of the loops. The tension of the loops on the shells is tight but not to the point to where it becomes difficult to remove a round. For $25 bucks you can’t beat it. I also like the added fact that if you run your carrier dry all is takes is to rip the old one off and slap a new one on. I am going to try out esstac’s shotgun cards hopefully soon. They are similar in design and are sold through skd tactical:
ETA: Two things I left out. The shotgun card is only the shell carrier and does not include the receiver mount. Also on 3 gun gear’s website the lowest round count carrier is the 7 shell holder. On my mossberg I had to cut 2 loops off because of the extra length on it compared to the receiver. I cut it with a razor blade then burned that same end to stop any fraying of the material. It looks and works fine now.
The 20" A1 is a tank of a shotgun. I liked mine, but they are significant.
As far as the heatshield, they are rare because there really weren’t any made until Mike Shain at Aimpro made them. There was a very rare factory model, but they almost never show up for sale. I modified a factory shield to work with mine, but I took it off.
Totally agree, if you’re running a bead, these are great. I don’t really like bead sights, and this thing is converting me.
Without a doubt, the best shotgun rig I’ve found or used. I’ve only been using it for a little while, but it is solid greatness.
The SF forend is probably the best way to run a light if you can swing the scratch. I intend on changing my stock out for a short LOP as well.
You can cram all kinds of crap into the Micro: 24 rounds, BOK, spare batts, Kerlix, chemlights, shears, NFA paperwork, Sharpie, etc. Even with this, it is still a small, light platform.
An additional benefit is that you can use the 3 Gun Gear, Vang DSAC, and SKD shotgun carriers on the Velcro at the front of the Micro if you want. Then you would just remove the entire card from the front of the Micro and slap it on the side of the shotgun rather than removing individual rounds.
