Maybe Brownells bought the site to eliminate it? M4 never was a big competitor to the big ARFCOM, just a good place to visit and talk.

I played with preferences and can’t get out of dark mode to something less dark, all it seems to do is make think even darker. Hitting reply to a post does not copy/quote any more. It did till recently.
True, replying does not pollute the thread with quotes from previous posts over and over again. I think that’s a good thing. If you are interested in reading all replies to a particular post click the down arrow in the bottom left “Replies”.

When I reply to a person, I want it to quote that person as it did before. Otherwise it’s a floating response without context and i have figure out who said what and why. I don’t prefer it.

Seriously though, I don’t find it difficult to follow along. Folks on M4C seem to be able to post stand alone commentary that makes their point clear even to a casual observer like myself. The prior format often included more quote than reply, accomplishing little but to pollute the screen with repetitive quotes.
You have to click “reply” on the post you wish to quote. Then highlight the text you wish to quote. When you highlight the text, the option to quote that text appears on the screen. You click on
“quote”, and it formats the quote in your reply box where you type.
A little laborious, but it still works.

This site died long before the format changed. Compared to the traffic of the early days, it’s been dead around here for quite some time. I think it’s the constant “CoLt iz THe BeSt” attitude that chases people away, on top of the internet commandos arguing with SMEs that chased them off as well.
I haven’t noticed those issues as a problem in a long time. I am glad that the days of bragging on whose goofy class you took are over. That crap was so dumb.
The site slowly died down for several reasons. My biggest gripe was the “use the search function” Nazis. Shit! There’s only so much M4 talk to justify brand new thread subjects. Who cares if a topic has been covered. The site is slow enough to revisit subjects.

The search function on the old forum was almost useless anyway. That likley lead to a lot of repeat threads.
It was quirky, but that seems to be an issue on most forums.
Google advanced search was better to use than any forum I can recall, but they “improved” it till it sucks too.

It was nice that the tech forums were uncluttered by identical posts, if you want to just talk about shit that is what GD is for.
Some members defend this “upgrade”. I see no upgrade as most members see no upgrade. They see a poorly thought - out paradigm shift which appears to be based on “we the owners know what’s best for you”.

I think it’s more a matter of they bought what somebody sold to them as the “newest / bestest”, we finally got a like button but everything else needs some tweeks. Hopefully enough people hang in there to help get some changes done.
For example, I miss the old YT link button.

I have been a member here for a number of years but for some reason I could never log on. My password was always incorrect, couldn’t reset it, and I couldn’t reach anyone in admin. I stopped by the site the other day and now it has the new format. I was finally able to reset my password and now I can post.
Not sure I like the new format. Time will tell I guess
