New M&P9 FS

Just got it today. Bought it from Grant. Thanks again Grant. New Production. Audible and tactile reset if it matters. Shot it right away. No upgrades except Ameriglo I-Dots. 5 10rd mags.

Ended up shooting 200 rds of 115gr PMC at shoot-n-c targets. Shot 10 at 10yds, 10 at 15yds, about 50-60 at 3-5 yds, 10 at 25 yds prone and 100 at 25 yds on a hard flat surface on the mag base plate.
I switched from medium to large back straps and back. Groups at 3,5 and 10 yds standing were fine for my 1st time shooting the gun. At 25, it was horrendous.
I did notice toward the end, more and more hits toward the center of the target. I don’t know if I started getting the trigger down, a proper support and grip, sight alignment and POA for these sights and the MP, all of the above or it was a fluke.
It was enough for me to hold on to the gun and buy some different Ammo and get many more rds down range. Not sure if its the Indian, arrow or both. I’m admittedly bad at 25 standing but felt I had good support on the bench. Although the slight progress gives me hope.
Otherwise this gun needs no upgrades and is a kitten to shoot. I could see it being my go to if I get it to shoot consistently accurate and spent rds stop hitting me in the head.

Guess I posted this when there are 4 million other M&P 9 posts. Oops.

Congrats on the M&P9!

I dropped the ball on my review and haven’t had time to take pics or shoot it much more than I already have. Nonetheless I might just post em in here as a compliment to your review. I have nothing to add other than I still haven’t shot mine at 25. I’m interested to see with a little more time on the gun if your groups improve at 25.

Ill keep you posted. Feel free to post your progress in here.

So the M&P 9 full size guns are giving brass to the face like the newer Glock 9s?

Ugh…say it isn’t so.

S&W changed the extractor in the pistols to better deal with shallow rims of the Winchester ammo. After a couple hundred rounds of shooting, the spring loosens up a bit and the extraction changes.

My BCM hat has about 50 tiny specs on the front from brass hitting it. They’re coming back hard and fast too. Some were landing on my arms, some over my head. Good thing I was wearing a hat.

Oh no, Smith has decided to switch to 10-round mags in 9mm. Wait, you live in NY…

Sorry, I could not resist rubbing it in. Look on the bright side, you will probably save some money on carry ammo. Then again, you probably can’t even get a carry license in NY…

Is there a stiffer aftermarket extractor spring for the M&P9 full-size ot help with this problem?

I am doing as much research as possible on an alternative to my problematic G19. If the new Apex extractor does not cure the brass to face…I am dumping this pistol.

Along with the PPQ, P-30 and just trying to find a nice lightly used older G19 or G17…I might look at the M&P but it seems to have it’s share of warts as well. Too bad because it feels really nice in the hands.

Thanks for contributing to this thread Sensei, you’re a fucking genius. We get it rubbed in our faces everyday here. Don’t need another pro gun guy doing it as well. Contribute advice or data pertaining to the M&P 9 FS or go to general discussion and joke around there.

No spring needed as they break in.

I also heard (…and this might not be true) that S&W plans on putting the Shield’s better trigger in the M&P fullsize 9s…is that true?

Its so new and shiny and untouched! It looks weird after seeing mine for so long.

No, but Smith has gone in and redone a lot of what people hated about the old style trigger. The take up is much smoother once the striker block is broken in a bit, although I will be going with an Apex USB, the stock striker block on mine no longer has that gritty, creepy feeling.

The break is a lot more positive too, with very little over travel. The hated “false reset” is also gone as well. The reset is audible, and tactile, as the OP stated. I wouldn’t say it is as nice as some of the other guns on the market, and some will still want the DCAEK from Apex, but overall S&W has come a long way.

Great pistol…congrats!

Hey Newyork, give that pistol a few range sessions before you judge it’s 25 yard accuracy. If I have not shot my M&Ps for awhile, it really takes me some righteous time to get acclimated to them again. Up to three range sessions for my little 9MM compact (unlike my H&Ks, PPQs or S&W revolvers).

I also tend to shoot better groups freehand than using a bench but I probably need to be shown proper bench rest technique as whatever I do off of the bench is usually somewhat inconsistent.

Nice sights, by the way.

Will do. Thanks brotha.

Congrats on your purchase. Looks like a great setup.

What made you decide on the M&P?

BTW, I live in NJ and feel your frustration. Even living in NJ, S&W ships these pistols w/ 10 round mags, while S&W makes 15rnd’ers for NJ and doesn’t ship them w/ the pistols to NJ.

Totally of topic, I dig your AR’s. Nice AWB setups.

I picked up an M&P 9FS a month ago. March manufacture date. I have 500 rds through it so far with no extractor issues. AE 124gr loads all eject just fine.

Haven’t done any 25m accuracy testing so I can’t speak to that.

I don’t think its enough of an improvement to replace my Glock 17 or 34.
