New and first AR build HSA-15

Hello Im new to the forum and this is my first post hope to be able to provide and gain knowledge from the site so heres my post of my new build of a High Standard HSA-15 with 16" stainless barrel.

How it looked at purchase tag price was $696
Gas key staking
Shrouded firing pin
Upper receiver
Feed ramps
Bolt and extractor
1/7 twist 5.56 NATO
Lower receiver stamping
FSB

I found it kinda difficult to find a whloe lot if information on this rifle prior to purchasing. There web site gives little to no specific detail on anything on it. Hope maby this post can also help others if considering the HSA-15. now for what Iv added to the rifle as of now there will be more to come. Magpul UBR stock , ergo grip, Magpul MOE foregrip but it actualy came with it when I got it.and a genaric Eotech 552 ripoff site. at the end of the week I will be getting in a YHM railed gas block with boynet lug to replace the FSB.

I didn’t know High Standard made ARs. Looks nice and clean. Are there any markings on the bolt (MPI or HPT)? What color is the extractor insert? Is the front sight base “F” marked at all? How does it shoot?

An HSA-15 was my first AR also; 3 years ago. I can’t speak for the OP but mine had a barrel that was 1/9, not HPT/MP, and had that unorthodox staking job. Since then I’ve replaced pretty much everything except the upper/lower, LPK, and barrel. For 1/9 it shoots decently. Have over 10,000 rds through it with no issues. I kept the semi BCG for about 3,000 of that and didn’t have issues, but didn’t trust something that wasn’t HPT/MP; however, it’s still in my parts bin.

That unorthodox staking method as you called it, is the way it is done in the military when replacing a carrier key. It’s called the Field Staking method.

Have you fired this yet? Just curious because your upper has no M4 style feedramps and something about the way that barrel extension meets up with the upper looks strange.

I have not fired this gun as of yet hopefuly I will get a chance to this weekend I ordered a few different manufactures and grain for it to see what works best and is cost effeciant. On the FSB there is no F marking I could find and no markings at all on the bolt. as for the extractor color the bushing is blue.

No I havnt fired it yet but I agree the feed ramps just do not look right like there unfinished .Im going to see if I can get the ramps fixed but Ill see how it functions first. I found online where someone had said that the way the ramps are done is not great but its ok.

Looks like your barrel has an m4 barrel extension(made for a receiver with extended feedramps). Should run though but im not sure if anyones ever run into feeding issues this way.
I really like the lower though. Nice and simple, no fancy logos. Just the way I like them.

Hmm interesting. That’s something I never saw when I was in, but then again I never heard anything about an M4 needing a key replaced within my company.

Back on topic: I just checked my HSA upper (just to be sure) and it does have M4 feedramps.

I do agree I dont care to have a big animal stamped into the side of my rifle.

Now that I have taken the gun out afew times I wanted to say the gun shot great, although this is my first AR so I cant compare its performance to others, but it was very comfortable to shoot. I just put in an order for some pmags and YHM QDS sights “pics to come” but I have installed a YHM gas block.

Might I enquire as to why you put a shit gas block that screws into place rather than just keeping the original FSB?

Or taking the FSB and cutting it down and shaving it?

Im going to put flip up sights on it and the front one on the gas block I was unaware the screw on ones where shit, the gun shop recomended it I still have the pin on FSB.But I can see how the screw on one could cause reliablity issue if the screws come loose now that you bring it up though.

My opinion only. I would have left the in place. There really is no need to put a flip sight on it. The exception being when using certain magnified optics. If you are using a red dot, you won’t have an issue.

You can still use a rear BUIS.

Well its been awhile since Iv updated this thread a friend of mine was talking about getting an AR so came back to look at my thread I did get the YHM BUIS and here they are and after some pics iv noticed my gas block seems to be tilted a bit

I would suggest you replace that gas block with one that has a Picatinny rail on it like THIS. Also, I would replace the BUIS with some Troy’s. YHM is known to have many shortcomings similar to A.R.M.S.

OP,

Remember when I advised against the screw on type gas block? Well now you know why.

Ahh rub it why dont ya. but yea im not sure if it moved or was installed wrong, they installed it at the gun shop when I purchased it so I need to realign it and see if it moves again or get a differnt one down the road

Did you ever run into any issues with the M4 feed ramp/non M4 upper setup? did you ever pull any live ammo out of the chamber after firing to check and see if it’s damaging the brass or bullet? I’m curious because the feed ramp setup isn’t optimal, but may still work. However, it could be acusing issues you’re not even aware of?
