MADRID, July 9 (Reuters) - Belgium’s prime minister was a little surprised on landing back home from Wednesday’s NATO summit in Turkey to find that he had a handgun and ammunition in his luggage.
After NATO leaders gathered for Wednesday’s in Ankara, their host, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, handed each an unusual parting gift: a vintage revolver, along with live ammunition indicating it was not just for show.
Handguns and carry are legal in Turkey although heavily regulated. I haven’t compared carry regulations side by side but my guess is Turkey is about as draconian as US “May Issue” jurisdictions were not that long ago here in the US. In Tennessee… being at the mercy of local law enforcement to obtain legal status to carry concealed was awful, not to mention legal carry only pertained to that jurisdiction, not elsewhere in the state. Truly fucked up. We’ve come a long way since the dark days of May Issue. Seems like such a long time ago but it was just since the 1990s that things been to change.
