My new and first AR build... :D

Alright, I’m a complete AR noobie…so bear with me

I bought a Templar Consulting AR-15 which has a RRA Lower and matched DPMS Upper with a couple other goodies (Yankee folding rear sight, free float handguard, Magpul Moe stock and handle, and the barrel is chrome lined). But I was looking to put my own twist on the rifle. So I’m looking for feedback on the potential build I’m looking for. So I guess I’m just going to post pics of my rifle right now, then the potential parts that I want. Thanks in advance!

Pictures first

It won’t let me post the pic of my MOE grip and stock…but it’s simple and they are in black.

Alright…that’s my new baby!

Oh and I forgot to mention my buddy let me borrow/have his Knight’s Armament foregrip.

Ok so for the upgrades:

The Vltor CASV-M in tan. It looks sturdy and lightweight at the same time.

They have the mid-length and the extended-length so. I don’t really know which one would fit better and which one I should get.

The UBR from Magpul. Love their products so far and it looks really nice…I think this one my be a little over kill but

The MIAD Full Grip Kit. I have oddly shaped hands and so I would love to have the customizability of this grip.

Magpul Trigger guard. Pretty explanatory.

Magpul Sling Attachment point. I really like this new one because I already have one that swings above, but it’s kind of annoying when switching…this one swings on the bottom so it’s really nice.

Magpul Multi-mission sling. It seems REALLY nice…it’s really customizable and it’s Magpul…can you really go wrong?

Noveske Flash Suppressor. Looks awesome with the Vltor piece.

Foregrip with TRL-1! Looks good on my all black XD(m) and the AR

Low-profile gas block from Vltor. Needed for the Vltor piece

I’m also looking for a folding front sight, looked at the Vltor one. Can’t seem to find much info from Vltor itself, but…

OK so I’m done…LMK what you guys think and if anyone has any feedback on any of the pieces that would be greatly appreciated! Oh and all the pieces are going to be in tan. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks guys!

Have you shot it yet? I’d make sure to confirm function before I spent my money on anything but ammo.

haha yeah, I’ve put about 75 rounds through it…there isn’t a public rifle range that I have access to as of right now, but I did get it sighted for 25 yards with a buddy of mine. It’s pretty sweet…shoots as good as anyone would expect…

I can tell you that the Vltor CASV fore stock is awesome!
Both are for the carbine length gas system which is what your rifle is from the looks of it. They’re both the same length, only difference is the CASV-EL has a cut out for the forward sight block, and the CASV-M doesn’t have a cut out at all.

For you I’d recommend the CASV-EL since you have the standard forward sight block. If you want to use the CASV-M you’re going to have to remove the Forward Sight Block and replace it with a low profile Gas Block and mount a forward sight if you want iron sights at all. Vltor makes a flip up forward site specifically for the CASV-M.

Here’s the direct link to Vltor’s Sight tower: http://www.vltor.com/vst.htm

Hope this helps

That is easy to say when you shoot 75rds slow-fire. Instead of tricking out your rifle you should make the necessary upgrades to ensure reliability first. Then, with all the money you saved on the accessories you don’t need, learn to shoot it–enroll in a high round count course.

Yeah, that’s probably very true…I need to find a good rifle range around here…I’m a super n00b when it comes to AR’s and well firearms in general and I’ve been doing a lot of reading but it’s still pretty confusing without actually learning hands on for me. Someone has recommended a BCM bolt upgrade. I’ve posted on some other forums that I’m a part of and they are recommending just the upgrades for reliability and then shooting as much as possible, then going to do some other upgrades…i think that’s the best idea…just shooting as much as possible. So I now have to find a good rifle range to go to…

Hehe but I still want to get those upgrades…I like the tan and black look and the upgrades too…but I think I have A LOT to learn about the AR world…and many more rounds to put through my baby  Thanks for the quick turn around though…

What do you guys think about the build though still? hehe

gonna need some work… it’s assembled now, though, so things like the handguards (definately ditch the YHM) can wait.

get this: http://www.bravocompanyusa.com/BCM-SOPMOD-Bolt-Upgrade-Rebuild-Kit-p/bcm%20bolt%20upgrade%20kit.htm when they get back in stock. make sure your key is staked, make sure your castle nut is staked.

and shoot, shoot, shoot… find a good spot somewhere, or get a range membership. if you’re in the Great Northwest i can recommend some ranges.

shoot, shoot, shoot… most important part. get a book on marksmanship, get BRM down, then start running drills. when you shoot, don’t just blow up TVs and water jugs and crap- make every round a learning experience. shoot for accuracy, shoot for speed, then shoot for both. shoot at least 300 rounds per session, more if you can afford it- seems like most people go and shoot 75 rounds and get bored/broke and think they’ve accomplished something… when in fact they’ve accomplished nothing but maybe a sketchy zero. but some good gear- eyepro, earpro, basic 2-point sling, lots of targets with multiple bullseyes, and sticky circles, hammer-tacker or staple-gun… build a range kit- throw everything in a tote so it’s ready to go, so you don’t forget shit or spend 2 hours looking for shit every time you get a chance to shoot. when you shoot, pay attention to the things that bug you, things that seem like they could be improved upon, and take notes. keep a notebook with round-counts and observations.

read here often, post questions as you go. once you get 1500-2000+ rounds or so downrange, we can talk about upgrading the handguards/stock/pistol grip/RDS/sling/etc- you’ll have a better idea what your needs are then.

and some spray paint will give you the tan/black you want.

and have fun. welcome to the board, and welcome to the club.

Forget about the KX3 on a 16" barrel, they’re intended for 12.5" barrels and under. Your aren’t going to want to hang nearly a half pound of metal at the end of your barrel. I almost did just that. Trust me, if you saw it in real life and picked it up, you’d immediately re-think your choice. It will make your rig awkward and front heavy.

If you ask me, a light, sling, red dot sight (or nice glass) and you’re done. Use the rest of the money on ammo, shoot the shit out of that gun, figure out what it will need to run reliably, then upgrade as necessary. You’ll waste thousands of dollars on stuff and not have any lead to send down range if you don’t slow your roll and stick to the basics. Been there, done that. Not everything needs an “upgrade”.

Remember that owning an AR is kind of like owning a Harley. You can spend money hanging chrome on it until you are tired, out of cash or both.

It’s a new rifle, concentrate on shooting it. After spending some time with it, then decide what, if anything, you want to add or change. You may find that keeping the configuration simple works better for you than adding lots of accessories you may not need. Nothing wrong with aesthetics, but don’t let it get in the way of the function or efficiency of the rifle.

I would put a lot of rounds down range before making any changes to the rifle, I need to make a correction on how the rifle was assembled and what parts were used. The upper is actually a Del-ton with 16 inch chrome lined Wilson barrel. If you have any questions or need any assistance please feel free to call me anytime.

Bob Reynolds.

Thanks for the great input guys…seems the general consensus for me is to just plain out SHOOT…so that’s what I’m going to do. A friend and I just found a pretty good range with 100 yard rifle lanes, so I should be posting up some good pics with targets and the such! Be on the look out for my results! I think I’m going to go re-read all the stickies and learn my rifle inside, out, and upside down (as an old EMT Captain once told me). Hopefully the input will keep coming…

That EMS Lt. (not a Capt. anymore!) would be me!

Buy ammo, and let me have some of it. I’ll let you know when I can make it out to the range.

VERY well said!
