This is my first ever build. I built this because i wanted a clone of my favorite weapon, the M16A4, and i will also be using it to further my marksmanship, and to begin competing in service rifle class.
Spikes stripped lower i got for a good deal
Daniel Defense lower parts kit
BCM 20" 1/7 upper with Knight’s armament M5 rail system
LMT full auto BCG, came with the upper i purchased used
Troy sling
This is my first ever lower receiver assembly, and it went smoothly. I really enjoyed it and will be doing it again.
I know how everyone feels about spikes tactical, but it was a good deal.
Because the lower was practically given to me, and since im only 20, i cant purchase a stripped lower from anywhere thats an ffl, i can only purchase it privately in the state of texas. This isnt going to be a duty or home defense rifle. Just a plinker. I will eventually get ahold of a bcm, noveske, or DD lower.
Is spikes milspec?? i figured they werent do to all the negativity about them on here. Or is that towards all the color filled mall ninja stuff generally on the lower? i just wanted one with the markings for safe semi and auto filled in for a little pop.
What exactly is wrong with a Spike lower? They are machined in spec and are made with 7075 forgings. Plus they are inexpensive and they do work. I have built an AR with a Spikes stripped lower and I know several other people that have as well and every one of them works just fine.
As far as I know there’s nothing “wrong” with a spike’s lower but some people just don’t want/like spikes. I thought the pictograms were neat at first but I quickly lost interest in them, and the fact that it’s a pretty new company with die hard fanboys is a turn off too. Functionally and dimensionally, I don’t think I’ve heard of anything wrong with their lowers but I haven’t really paid attention to it. It’s mostly just personal preference.
Oh I’m sure nothing. I’ve never worked with anything Spikes, nor do I have much of an opinion on their stuff. The only thing is the logo, I don’t know why a company would choose such a tasteless logo. That’s my opinion and it is a purely cosmetic issue.
It was annoying when I had to settle for a Stag lower during the terror of '08. But since then I’ve moved up to a BCM and Palmetto lowers, both of which have a nice look to them.
Is the sling attached to the barrel or the rail? Seems a shame to ‘waste’ the free float-iness by tugging on the barrel with a sling (assuming this is a target rifle, as stated).
ETA: Or is that a drop in rail? Couldn’t find specs on that.
I’ve been very tempted to do a full size build myself.
And don’t let anyone give you crap about the Spike’s lower. An in-spec lower is an in-spec lower. Bashing Spike’s is the cool kid thing to do around here.
Buy lots of ammo, wring her out for everything she’s worth, and do it again.
