Muzzle Device Help...

I’m looking to get some thoughts on a muzzle device to have pinned on my DD M4. It currently has a YHM Phantom flash hider pinned, but it will have to be removed for installation of a low pro gas block for a 13” Troy Alpha rail. The original FSB was removed a couple of years ago to install a clamp on type flip up front sight.

Here’s the background… In addition to shooting holes in paper, I’ll be using this rifle for tactical carbine shoots at a local gun club (5-200 yd targets) and hopefully to take a carbine class next year. It sits in the front of the gun safe and would be the rifle I’d grab if I ever had to… hopefully that day will never come. For longer range shooting, my other AR has an 18” WOA SPR barrel with a Rainier Arms XTC. That thing shoots like a dream without hardly any recoil or muzzle rise. However, it’s pretty loud and has considerable blast if standing beside it. I’d like to try to get as much of that feel with the DD M4. I know I won’t get all the way there (carbine vs rifle gas, 14.5” vs 18”barrels …). I’d also like to keep the noise, blast, and flash to a manageable level. I don’t want to be the guy no one wants to shoot beside…

On my short list of muzzle devices were the Battle Comp 1.5, Dynacomp Extreme, PWS FSC556… I’m actually very interested in the PWS Triad that I had read some interesting reviews of. If it would help keep the muzzle down and on target without the normal concussion of a comp I can live without a lot of recoil reduction. I don’t have an opportunity to shoot a rifle with these muzzle devices on them, so I was looking for some good advice from people that have. Or maybe there is something that my better suit my needs…

I’ve read endless threads about the best comps but still haven’t been able to decide… so I thought I’d give you a little background and ask for some opinions. Thanks for the help…

I have a PWS Triad that I’ve tried on a Sig 556 and a SCAR. In both cases I haven’t done a A-B comparison with another hider or brake. The Sig did have less rise and better muzzle control than I was expecting for a rifle with a dropped stock comb. The SCAR has almost zero muzzle rise, but the recoil force on it is almost all straight back.

As far as quality of the Triad, it’s well made and the finish seems to be reasonable tough. It shows wear but no damage yet. It also doesn’t ring like the AAC Blackout that’s on my wife’s AR.

I’ve been using a Triad for about a year now, and a second one for 7-8 months. I’m pretty happy with them. No benefit on recoil but a huge reduction in muzzle rise (another review I’ve read said too much). I have used them only on 16" midlength AR15s in 5.56. My review is basically the same as that of halmbarte.
