Muzzle Brake Issues?

Two questions guys:

  1. Has anyone had any problems with certain types of brakes burning/eroding the crown of their barrel?

  2. Has anyone had any experience with a brake showing a lot of wear (peening and erosion) after higher round counts?

I’m hoping for answers from high round count shooters and industry professionals. I’m just trying to get some general information to see if the above questions have any merit.

Thank you in advance to all that respond.

Hmmm, I would have thought at least one of you high volume shooters would have experienced some erosion of your brake (or crown when using a brake)? It’s not an unheard of occurrence.

No problems whatsoever with the BattleComp 1.0

^^Thanks, how many rounds do you have through it? What is your barrel length?

5000 rounds through a mickuleck. No observable wear. 3950 through a smith vortex. None either. No other experience in high round count.

I’ve got over 5000 through a YHM 5M1 and well over 5000 (corrosive) through a Troy Medieval out of a 5.45 upper, no issues. There’s some crusty buildup on the crowns of both, but I live in NY and they’re permanent. If you live in a state where you can take them off occasionally and give them a scrub, no big deal whatsoever.

And for the record, the crusty buildup has had no effect on the function or accuracy of either of the guns whatsoever (and consider that 90% of the time I shoot wolf or other russian, clean the rifle and shoot 69gr. match afterwards, almost no change in accuracy from the day the barrel was new on the 5.56-chambered CMMG 16" gov-profile midlength). I’ve never shot anything but surplus 5.45 through the M&P upper, but no change in accuracy there either. Also, from time to time I attach an 8x40x56 benchrest scope to all my rifles to gauge accuracy change, and it’s nominal if existant at all in both rifles.

I think people freak out way too much about the accuracy of their rifles over time, or what effect attaching various gadgets to them will have on them, but it’s completely unmerited. These things are designed for warfare, do your worst. Buy a barrel designed for that purpose and do your worst, you won’t mess it up in regular use.

Just got a Rainier RMC in the mail today, as soon as I finish the build I’ll be pumping some ammo through that too.

I had that PWS 556 thingy for about 800 rounds or so… It did no harm to the barrel, but the brake was visibly erroding. (14.5" barrel)

Over 5000 rounds through the BattleComp.

In my experience a FH will not erode it will just get carbon build up. A true MB can erode depending on the material it is made of. My Surefire shows not erosion, but my SJC titan shows some erosion. The SJC has a lot of rounds through it.

Matt

I have A2 Flash hiders that have erosion at the ends of the cuts from being fired on an SBR.

Thank you for the responses guys.

The surefire FH556k on one of my 16" rifles shows some minor erosion at the ends of the slots at around 3,000 rounds. Still works great and accuracy hasn’t changed.
