Passed by this spot several times through the years with no rainbow, but got lucky on time of day and rain fall.
It’s a good day when you can get out and hike. Nice picture.
Nice. We used to go there back when I lived in Cookeville. The wife and I came close to going over the dam in a canoe once……fun times.
That would be a long drop!
They had some rough weather down here. Think they said this was from last May.
Video shows the rainbow colors better.

Waterfall on the edge of their lake.
Wow, that is a lot of damage. It seems to take a long time for cleanups but could be because Tennessee state parks don’t seem to be well funded. It took forever for Fall Creek Falls to get cleaned and trails cleared after a bad storm several years ago. The visitor’s center was falling apart, too, before they revitalized the park. Georgia charges a small fee per car for their parks and the money goes right back into them, and you can tell. I would go for that here.
I think they have something like a “friends of TN state parks” group, but not sure where they are focused or how they work. A group like that got started for the Sheltowee Trace(trail that starts in Pickett and goes to Morehead, KY) a few years back that has done a lot of repair work.
Guessing it may increase over the next few years too based on leaning trees and how much rain and wind they get.
From what we were told the ground was saturated for quite awhile followed up by straight line winds.
Hit or miss on where trees went down, but a lot of the park south of the main office looks like this.
It was only spilling over about a 6’ section Sunday afternoon so more rain this week than i thought.
Nice pics. I forgot what a nice park that is, it’s been 20 years or so since I’ve been. When we lived in Cookeville used to go to Standing Stone State Park and Big South Fork, too. And Sgt. Alvin C. York’s home and mill have been turned into a state park and isn’t too far away.
We stayed at Standing Stone about 8 years ago, but prefer Pickett’s trails.
Interesting to me at Standing Stone was no bear proof trash cans, just old school free standing galvanized ones. Still wonder if the apparent lack of coons raiding the cans had any connection to a .22lr empty out in the cabin driveway. ![]()
Another oddity was squirrels at Standing Stone gnawing on metal trail markers.
Been to York’s mill and house once when it was self guided and in 2023 after they started using tour guides. Getting to wander around back and forth was cool, but the tour guide version was a lot more interesting.
There is a lot to do in the middle TN area. Lots of state parks, natural areas and pocket wildernesses. They totally refurbished the lodge at Fall Creek Falls. It makes for a nice weekend getaway; my wife and I stayed there for our 30th anniversary and hiked all over the park. Here are a couple of pictures.
Very cool. We have some spots in AZ that can be beautiful too in the right conditions. Those times are decades apart sometimes.
There are some areas in Daniel Boone that are pretty all the time due to underground water sources keeping ferns growing year round while roughly a mile away areas that don’t have the underground water will be gorgeus this time of year, but during the usual late summer/early fall dry spell will look like it has been sprayed with herbicide.
