maybe militec works good after all...

when i first got my AR a guy at work gave me a bottle of militec. i lubed my rifle up with it… shot it… used it about every 100 rounds for the first 300-500 rounds.

then i read a lot of people didn’t like it on here. so i switched back to old faithful CLP mostly because i had some laying around.

about 500 rounds after i stopped using militec, my gas rings started getting really sticky after 50 rounds or so. functioned fine, just harder to pull the charging handle back.

so was the militec doin it’s thing? supposedly it’s a metal conditioner…

i just re-lubed with militec.
i haven’t messed with the hair dryter trick or anything. it’ll get warm when i shoot it.

Personally I’m a slip2000 and militec fan. Never had a problem with CLP though.

He said he switched back to CLP.

When I bought my M1A, I figured “grease was grease”. Not so I found, as I am now a firm believer in Militec-1 grease. I’m curious to see how it will work on my coming M4 project. In the SOCOM anyway, it goes on tacky, stays put, lubricates well and is a snap to clean. I use it now in my Uzi and 1911. Sometimes you just stick with what works…

I have three different lubes that I have been using over the past three months or so. CLP and militec and this other stuff that I am currently “testing right now” is really all that is available. Ill go into a shop and ask for slip2000 or machine gunners lube I get the typical response, “Never heard of it, must not be any good. Here use this (CLP)”. The stuff I am currently using is supposedly use by BARRETT and some other manufacturers, but we all know how that goes. I cant remember the name of if for the life of me right now. I will repost when I get back from work/range time (monday nights cant pass up free ammo for work related training).

should i continue to use CLP in addition to militec?

militec is more of a metal treatment than a lube isn’t it? there’s no “1” on my militec bottle btw… it’s an old bottle. clear with white lettering. the stuff inside looks pretty much like motor oil. about 30-50 weight i’d say. smells weird.

says “militec weapons and machine shop grade” “synthetic metal conditioner”

is this the same stuff they sell now?

I am personally a CLP fan because it prevents corrosion. Millitec-1 does almost nothing in that department in my testing.

how much corrosion am i likely to see in a fully parked/anodized AR15 that’s stored indoors?

It all depends on where you live, where in the house you store it, how you store it, and how often you shoot/clean/lube it. Most likely, not much. Then again, I would rather have and not need than need and not have. Isn’t that why we buy ammo by the case and then rathole it away?

Sorry skyugo - I thought you were using Militec-1 Grease and not oil. I use grease and am curious as to how it will work in my AR-build. I also have a side use for it, as my grease gun is bad and the grease “weeps” a little oil. I keep the grease gun upright in one of my wife’s meatloaf pans, (shhhhh), and I get a nice thin pool of oil in the bottom. I use a shop rag to dip in it and wipe down the metal surfaces of my M1A - works like a charm.

aah… cool.
i have not messed with the grease. i’m of the school of “no grease on my AR”

it might be a nice thing for my AK or SKS though. should reduce wear without causing any cycling issues. i’ve yeat to find a way to cause any cycling issues in those monsters.

you make a good point. i generally dry and CLP the crap out of everything after any wet weather adventures.

mostly i’m just a range bunny though.

i’ll have to try slip2000 soon. i’ve got a full bottle of CLP and Militec to go through first though.

I use Militec grease on all of my weapons just as I used military issue grease in the service. Springs, and bolt carried get greased.

I recommend Eezox or Slip2000. I currently use Eezox…I don’t think it can be beat for corrosion protection and it definitely stays where I apply it WAY better than CLP. It smells a lot better than CLP too.

Every time I lube up a weapon with CLP the stuff ends up leaking out all over the place…Too damn messy and shitty smelling for me.

seems like CLP gets blasted out of the bolt internals in just a few shots really. can’t say i really mind the odor though.

i wonder if Rotella or that purple stuff… the heavy duty diesel oils… would they work on an AR15?

they’re designed to keep carbon in solution, and withstand heat and pressure… plus 5 bucks a quart, while expensive for motor oil, is cheap for gun oil.

Weapon Shield impresses me. It is persistant and does not dry out like CLP.

I have heard Millitech works well as an additive to CLP.

The military tested 28 different lubricants/cleaners and CLP came out on top. That is good enough for me.

the same military that uses a carbine length gas system… :stuck_out_tongue:

not that it’s bad, but mil standard doesn’t mean there’s no room for improvement.

Edited to remove link to QUIB’s photobucket acct. as it was hurting bandwidth.

Sorry, it was 23.

As far as “military standard”, no, they just tested 23 products against what was currently spec’ed and the best one won. It just happened to be the standard.

Let me put it another way. How many rifles that are properly maintained and lubed have failed BECAUSE of CLP? I would venture to say not many. The only real lube-related failure I have heard of is TW25B on 357SIG frames. It doesn’t seem to prevent wear like a good grease with the right pressure/friction addatives like RIG+P does.

When was the test conducted & is there a list of the 23 that were tested?

Thanks.
