It used to be that there were a lot of significantly used MaTech rear sights available, and they seemed to be a good deal for a solid, quality rear sight.
Now, I see a lot of them that’re brand new, and still for reasonable prices… are they real, or fake?
A while ago I got one that I’m pretty confident is real for very cheap on ebay. I suppose it’s possible that people are making clones and then distressing them, but it seems unlikely to me.
I have purchased a few Matech sights from gun forums and or GB…all of them were considerably less than 85 bucks even with shipping. If you look around they can be had for 50-60 bucks.
A brand new in the plastic Matech can be had for ~$60. Check for the cage code on the bottom for authentic.
Also, alot of Matech buis came on Colt 6920s as of late (thus I think the influx on the boards). The newer style has the picitinny gates logo on the side, not my favorite.
The nub that retains the upright in the collapsed position is prone to friction wear. When it no longer keeps the rear down, take a hammer and punch and gently peen it to restore function. Known issue. The mounting screw is also mediocre. Check out these threads for more:
If you are open to other options, I bought a used USMC KAC rear sight for 60 shipped off of ebay and it is real. If you want I can try and find the sellers info and PM it to you, he has them listed quite often.
The reinforced bracket and screw kit for Matech was my pet project when I was at BAD, production and ownership of it returned to me and Forward Controls last year. Slightly redesigned to remove 90 degree corners, it’s now designated as RKM, Retrofit Kit, Matech.
Read that off and on through the years. I was also friends with a mil surp vendor back in the mid 90’s that bought a pallet of stuff at a government auction and while sorting it found a live atropine injector and what appeared to be an Iraqi morphine syrette so based on that I am fairly sure that even stuff not intended to be sold, does get sold.
How does KAC know what items are classed as “trash” by the military. They loose all visibility once the item becomes Government property. All they can tell you is the THEY have never sold off any outside of a Mil-contract.
