My buddy Panzerschreck is a SOT and has several post 86 dealer samples, among them a HK G36C, and several transferrables.
We also had access to a couple HK 416’s, and another buddy of mine has a transferrable Springfield Armory SAR-48 Para, basically a select fire FAL Para.
Had a great day at the range.
Heckler and Kock G36C action…
Stupid shit-eating grin:
Heckler and Kock 416 10.5" action. One of the guys at the range bought an upper to mate with his transferrable Colt M16 lower. Fantastic piece of kit.
This was one of the post 86 DS guns, I dumped a 30 rd. mag through it, as a function check, and then stripped it and was able to hold the bolt in my hand. It was literally cool to the touch, like I hadn’t even fired a single round through it, and MUCH cleaner than a direct gas impingement system.
Overall first impression…“Damn this thing is fun!”
On a more serious note, I think it would do just fine in a class. It’s very controllable on full auto, either bursts or doing a mag dump, and it doesn’t get very hot either. Handled any ammo we put in it, including Olympic M193. I put the Trijicon TA44R Compact ACOG off of my Colt 6920 on it…the LaRue mount put the optic pretty high, but I think an Aimpoint in a decent mount would bring it back down.
If I could buy one legally, I’d definitely own one.
This is based on a first impression, without throwing it around the mountains and valleys of Afghanistan the way the Bundeswehr does, or testing it multiple times for zero shift.
I did notice that the buttstock carried a lot of vibration back to the cheekbone, I wasn’t the only one who commented on this. It could get uncomfortable.
Here’s a pic with the Compact ACOG on it with a LaRue mount.
