Has anyone here fired M196 (54gr.) tracer ammunition in a 1/9 twist rifle? If so, how did it shoot?
I’ve never fired it past 100m from a 1/9, but up to 100m it’s acceptable accuracy-wise.
I load the 54 grain tracer for plinking ammo.
I bought a batch of pulls last year and it shoots reasonable. Accuracy wise it’s at least minute of clay pigeon at 100 yards out of a 14 3/4" Bushie that I believe is a 1/7 twist. I’ve yet to do any target work with my 20" 1/9 with them though.
Powder wise I’ve been running 25 grains of WC846 but am almost out of that.
I’ve also yet to have one light up.

i thought 196 was 55gr?
i fired quite a bit of m196 from a mini14 when i was in the army. that doesn’t help you much, as the mini is a 6-MOA gun to begin with. i dont recall there being a difference in accuracy between the 193 and 196… both would knock down targets out to 100-125m, but anything past that was accidental.
i just fired off some 196 i had kicking around from a 1/7 barrel about a month ago… hit 12" dia round steel at 175m just fine. thats from an already exceptionally accurate barrel (WOA 16" stainless medium, sub MOA with almost all ammo i’ve put through it- including some 45grHP UMC that came in at about 1.5-MOA- damn impressive for a $275 barrel), and i didn’t bother to benchrest the stuff.
I am seeing it referred to in several instances as 54gr and 55gr. As far as I know they are slightly different just as the M856 tracer is different from the M855.
Since our Bushies are 1/9 and we have both types of ammo I am trying to make sure that the ammo is properly segregated and HSLD ninjas aren’t mixing them together as I have seen in many magazines that I am going through.
We’ve actually fired 856 thru 1/9 bushmaster barrels and it stabilized well enough to fly straight and far. 196 should be no problem at all.
markm,
I have no doubts that the M856 will be good. I am less sure of the M196 because of other stuff that I have heard. Unfortunately I can’t really test that theory with any distance here. BTW- It is 112 outside and I feel like I am going to melt.
DAMN! We’re under a hundred for the next 7 days I think. It’s been cloudy here for 2 and a half days with some rain. We might do a night shoot tonight.
Don’t worry; it’ll get hotter soon; it’s still May, and springtime.
BTDT, got the T-shirt.
This is my 4th year here, so I am pretty familiar with the summer as well. BTDT got the wardrobe.
