Hey guys,
I am trying to decide between a M16 vs. M16A1 carbine. Both appear new and are priced the same. Honestly, this gun is going to get shot–a lot. Which is the better choice?
Also, when were the carbines manufactred?

I would get the M16 if you plan to shoot it a lot. There are several vendors advertising inexpensive complete almost new M16A1 uppers. I would save the original upper and shoot the heck out of the replacement. You don’t see many original carbine uppers advertised. The carbine definitely has more coolness factor though. The carbine would probably have more resale value in the future.
If you are talking about the 14.5 inch skinny barrel style M16s, (Model 723) they were showing up at dealers around the mid 80s.
The carbine will increase in value a bit faster than the rifle. One downside to the carbine is that I would not remove the staked collapsible stock as this will detract from the factory original-ness of the rifle. Buying the M16 rifle will allow you to remove the buttstock and replace it with your favorite variant.
Honestly, if you can afford to do so, just buy them both and see if you can negotiate a sweeter deal by doing so (assuming they are being sold by the same person). I promise you’ll be glad you did at a later date.
What is the price on these M16s?
