M&P Trigger Problem

I purchased a M&PL when it first came out several years ago. I sent the gun of to Speed Shooters Specialties for their trigger job. Apex wasn’t in the picture yet. The SSS trigger job consisted of some kind of sear alteration, striker block radius and polish as some other tweaks that I can’t recall. The gun performed flawlessly for several years with a great trigger. Recently I started experiencing a dead trigger. After firing the trigger would not reset. I started researching the issue and discovered this was a somewhat common problem and S&W had remedied the problem with an updated sear housing block to accommodate a stronger sear spring and larger plunger. I also considered my trigger job could be contributing to the problem but decided to send the gun in the S&W and see where the chips would fall.

I sent the gun in and it was returned about 3-4 wks later “fixed.” In the documentation from S&W it said they replaced an altered sear and replaced another altered part however did not specify what part. They also replaced the ejector and ejector spring. It appears the original trigger and trigger bar is still in the gun. They also left the radius end sear block in the slide.

Here’s the problem. No the gun has almost no pre-travel before the trigger bar engages the sear. The break is reasonable however the trigger must travel all the way forward to reset. It almost won’t reset if you don’t come off the trigger bow with your finger. I own a stock, early model M&P Pro 5" and a Shield. Both have a discernible and acceptable pre-travel and much shorter reset. In addition I visited x2 gun shops and checked out the triggers on new M&Ps and both were similar to my other guns. I called S&W and could not get much info except to send it back in. They told me the sear housing block wasn’t replaced however I’m sure they were reading the same document I received when I got my gun back.

Anyone have any idea what might be going on? Opinions as to if I should send gun back to S&W or just order a new sear hosing block and Apex kit from Brownells, and perhaps a new trigger?

You more than likely had the old SHB with the small sear plunger and plunger spring. I find it odd that they wouldn’t replace that.

Without knowing what was done to the pistol initially and then what S&W did, it is hard to say for sure (without looking at it).

I would pull the SHB out of the gun and then look at the sear plunger to see what the size is.
