Some of us have a trigger pull gauge on our workbench to check our work. I purchased a Lyman digital trigger pull gauge 10 or 12 years ago and wanted to verify it was still a reasonably accurate instrument.
I checked my Lyman Trigger Pull gauge today using two check weights I made. I verified the accuracy of the check weights by weighing the bag and string I used to hold the bullets and two different batches of 230g bullets using a RCBS 1500 digital scale. I tested the Lyman gauge 5 times using each weight.
1st Test - Check weight was 1 lb. 8.2323 oz.
Check 1 - 1 lb. 8.3 oz.
Check 2 - 1 lb. 8.2 oz.
Check 3 - 1 lb. 8.3 oz.
Check 4 - 1 lb. 8.7 oz. (I may have moved a little on this check)
Check 5 - 1 lb. 8.3 oz.
Average was 1 lb. 8.36 oz.
2nd Test - Check weight was 5 lb. 7.3792 oz.
Check 1 - 5 lb. 8.0 oz.
Check 2 - 5 lb. 7.0 oz.
Check 3 - 5 lb. 7.5 oz.
Check 4 - 5 lb. 7.5 oz.
Check 5 - 5 lb. 7.5 oz.
Average was 5 lb. 7.5 oz.
I check trigger pull weights maybe 20 to 30 times per year. I think the Lyman Trigger Pull Gauge is good enough for most of us who do not repair or build firearms for a living.
Agree, I have one and it isn’t a precision instrument, but it certainly is consistent enough for my needs. My technique is what results in most of my erroneous readings.
T2C, After seeing this thread I checked my Lyman gauge using my Pachmayr trigger weights. AT 2, 3, and 4 pounds the error was less than 1 ounce across 6 tests for each weight. The only problem I ever experienced with the digital gauge is when weighing triggers with very short over-travel. Sometimes I would get high readings due to hitting the stop after over-travel. This is not a real problem though as it is easy to tell what is happening and discount those high readings.
I bought the Pachmayr weights in the mid 70’s when I started doing 1911 trigger jobs. The Lyman gauge was purchased when I started working on AR15 and Glock triggers more often. I found it to be a much better solution for that type of work.
Clearly the Lyman electronic gauge is pretty accurate and consistent. Any chance you can compare it to the more common/less expensive RCBS spring type gauge?
