Lube question

Has anyone ever heard of or used LPS 1, 2, or 3 as a firearm lube or preservative?

Never heard of it

What’s up with the bunch of lube threads. :stuck_out_tongue:

I use KG and WeaponShield.

Use the orange “Search” button on the upper right of this page.

They’re lubricants and protectants often used in aviation. They should work fine, but smell… odd. Biggest concern I have is whether they’d hold up to heat well, as their use is more geared toward extreme cold at high altitude.

Any reason as to why you are considering it?
I ask because I used to love mixing this and that, finding and trying all sorts of stuff, mostly out of boredom. I then tried Froglube and have so far been very satisfied. You might want to give FL a go if you’re just in search of a good lube to try.

Used it when I was a kid (Looooo…ng damn time ago)
on my guns. Perhaps it was a good alternative back then.

3 is a good preservative but LPS dries and turns into
varnish over time. You get tired of the smell after a while
and can’t seem to get it off your hands. Not really a good
lube in my opinion. Sort of a smelly version of WD40.

Find something better such as the newer synthetics.
They seem to stay lubriciuos for years.

Search will undoubtedly provide hours of reading on this for you. I’d stick to what’s proven and readily available.

This, Gunbutter, and Breakfree CLP are my favorites.

Fixed it for you

My wife is the QC/R+D manager for the lab here in Atlanta. She thinks that the stuff will be good for its’ intended purpose (cleaning, long-term, inside storage and long-term, outside storage, depending on what it is: LPS-1, 2, or 3). She agrees on the smell, but did not say anything about it turning to WD40-like varnish.

I started using LPS some 40 odd years ago on all kinds of stuff; firearns, mechanical equipment, electrical, …

I’ve seen what it turns into. I really would’nt recommend it.

But then again…

Fair enuff. She is an outstanding chemist, but not too smart about gun stuff. This is why I wanted to ask. It would be a shame to fill my new Noveske with varnish!

Is it a plasticizer-based lube? Plasticizer based lubes must be used in th eCOMPLETE absence of conventional petrol lubes or they will harden to gum.

Ask her if it is plasticizer based.

I blogged recently about a certain unproven lube failing miserably. Link is in my sig. I would stick with proven lubes since lube is such a small part of the big picture so long as your weapon is adequately lubed.

For yrs I used 3in1 oil now I use Castro 20w/50 synthetic :thank_you2:

No plasticizer in LPS 1. The wife said that the ratio of chemicals in it are formulated to maximize the CLP benefits of the goop.
