Local grocery store closing 50% off

The Food Lion chain is closing and my local store has everything (except beer and cigarettes) 50% off starting tomorrow morning.

I went today to pre-shop and get some prices on survival/staple food. I have no idea what I’m doing but I just got some prices and I was wondering if they’re good enough to stock up on.

All purpose flour 1.50 for a 5 pound bag
Powdered milk is 9.50 for the huge box (I think 20 pounds?)
Quaker Oats (42 oz) 1.80
Quart Kerr canning jars with lids and rings 5.50 for 12
Corn Oil 5 a gallon
Brown rice 6.50 for a 20 pound bag
Pinto beans 1.50 for 2 pounds

Most of my grocery shopping has been for a single guy and Im not experienced in the bulk/long term food storage game. I would be buying for my fiance and our future needs.

If there’s anything that I need to add or subtract please let me know. I realize that there’s a lot more than what is listed that needs to be bought but the store has a very limited stock

Thanks for the help

I would go with canned goods that have a long shelve live of at least two years, pasta and pasta sauce and canned meats.

Extra T/P and female sanitary items, soap and shampoo.

Try to buy items you normally eat/use and do your best not to dip into your supplies until your rotation date rolls a round.

I’m from Salisbury, NC (Food Lion HQ), and while I hate they can’t keep the store open, that’s been true of the whole chain since Tom Smith retired as CEO in the mid-'90’s. They seem to have been managed by trained chimps since those days.

Nonetheless, their loss is your GAIN - congrats on taking advantage of the prudent opportunity to stock up!

Everything on your list sounds good, you might want to add bulk salt, sugar, baking soda as well.

Two of the FL stores here are closing. I walked into one the other day and had forgotten hearing about it.

It’s a strange feeling to walk in and see bare shelves and then think, that it would be far worse in a real emergency. I’m used to seeing bread, milk, eggs gone when they call for snow. Or even one meat product on a special sale. But all the produce wiped out except for habenaro peppers. Paper products. Still had some canned goods but at 25% off it was no deal you can’t get every day. Lots of things are also marked to expire in 2012.

I do find myself checking all those dates now.

EDIT: BTW, if anyone likes Lentil soup. Costo has a box of organic lentil soup. Can’t recall brand. Sort of a brown box. Marked No GMO’s, etc. Anyway no expire date on box but cans inside are marked 2014. It’s really good. I find most soups ok at best. This stuff is really good though.

That’s exactly what I was thinking about walking down the aisles. Scary stuff.

A local store here closed about 2 years ago. Sugar, salt, TP, crisco, powdered milk, soup mix, and hard candy were what we got. All of it has stored well, and have yet to buy any TP(but it might be time soon).

I would load up on canned goods and then go for bulk stuff.
