I’m looking to build an AR and right now the LMT CQB MRP Piston Top End 16" is on the top of my list. Since it has been out for a while, I was just looking for some additional input other than what I’ve found around the internet.
I’ll throw in my $0.02: I’m absolutely in love with the solid upper/rail/handguard. It seems very logical for keeping everything zeroed in in violent environments. Although, I was considering the DI MRP rifle-length system by LMT, I’m really leaning towards their piston system, which is only available in the carbine-length CQB system.
So, what are your opinions? Anyone have anything bad to say about the LMT CQB MRP Piston 16" Top End?
If you use the search function you’ll find that LMT is well regarded here. Many love the idea/concept of a gas piston systemand many don’t see the need. Both have their valid points and concerns.
Thanks for welcoming me and thanks for your response.
I’m aware of the vast amount of information available here regarding piston vs DI debates and to LMT in general. A search for “LMT MRP” however yielded no results, nor did “LMT Piston.” Perhaps my browser is having issues, though.
I was mainly looking for first-hand opinions from those who own an LMT MRP system, especially the piston MRP.
I have one and I am very happy. It ran through a 2000 round Magpul class with zero issues and it is super accurate. Having said that, I wouldn’t buy without seeing it first. I say this crom first hand experience with LMTs poor QC and crappy CS.
I have one and am happy with it, though I’ve only put a few rounds through it so far. Of course, with the MRP you can always swap in a DI barrel or even a different caliber easy.
So, basically, the barrel assembly contains the full piston system and DI system respectively, allowing you to swap back and forth with just a change of barrel assembly?

The BCGs are different for DI or piston, but, you could do this sticking with either DI or Piston, just in different barrel lengths…and just use the same BCG. I like separate BCG’s anyway with bolts for each barrel. I already have a BCM m16 BCG, next; tax stamp and a 10.5" DI barrel.
Back on topic… I just got a 16" MRP Piston… Quality is absolutely outstanding!!! Haven’t yet fired it, but that will change with my ammo question above
I think I’ve made the right choice changing to piston system. This is the best I have fired so far. 300 rounds of Wolf ammo through the barrel. Even with Wolf ammo, it’s not as dirty as gas system. Go to go for me!
Longtime LMT MRP owner here (2004). I have no real input on DI/piston but I would suggest if you get an MRP get the CQB length. The main reason is you will limit your options if you buy a rifle length MRP - no piston, no barrels less than 14.5". Unless you are running night vision you probably won’t need all that rail. And the rifle length adds a good deal of weight to the system as well.
If the site search tool isn’t giving you the results you want, which is likely with something like “LMT MRP”; go to Google, enter your search string followed by “site:m4carbine.net”. (in other words, enter the red text: “lmt mrp site:m4carbine.net”)
