My 6920 is bone stock except for replacing the carry handle with a Troy folding rear sight and an Aimpoint CompM4s. A class I am considering requires a weapon-mounted light.
Searching and reading, it seems to me the simplest and most economical solution is probably rob_s’s Surefire X300 and Streamlight AR-15/M16 Tactical Illuminator Mount combination. Is that the case or still the case?
Beyond that, considering light output, functionality and a clean installation without significantly altering the gun, what better options exist?
Any reason it wouldn’t work well? Any better ideas considering original goals of light output, functionality and clean installation without significantly altering the weapon?
I’m not a fan of mounting a light at 6:00. I’m not alone on this forum in that thought.
Not ideal , but due to department policy, I’m very limited as to how I can mount a light to my AR. This is what I’m using: Midwest Industries Tactical Light Mounts.
I use the -01 version with an X300. Works well for my needs.
I have seen others comment about mounting at 6:00 o’clock not being desirable but haven’t seen an explanation. What is the downside?
My carbine has, and I use, the sling attach point on the left side at the base of the front sight. Looking at the picture of the mount you provided the link to, it looks to me like the mount would be clear of the sling. Is that correct?
this + this + this is probably the cheapest route I’d feel comfortable with. I have one of the VTAC mounts and broke it installing it, but I may well have done something wrong on the install.
My favorite on the carbine-length gas system is the MCTAR-04 with X300, but that can get pricey. The VTAC mount, and any other mount that only has one recoil lug in it, will work on the 04, if you want more flexibility or have more lugs get the 01. GG&G makes similar product here.
That’ll work. My interest is not the cheapest that I can do it, but the best without installing a rail or modifying the weapon in a way that can’t be reversed.
This is exactly what I was going to recommend except with a Vltor inline scout mount for the light instead. It puts the light exactly where it needs to be: next to your thumb on your support hand.
Thanks all! I decided that the X300 mounted on the front sight was about as good as I could do and ordered the goodies. Looking out the window, waitin’ on Brown!
I can’t get the sling to mount off the left side with that mount; I use a 6:00 mount for my sling in this config. Its not ideal for me, but I make it work.
With a light mounted at 6:00, the barrel shadow will extend forward and upwards, depending on how far the light is from the end of the barrel. This can cast a shadow right where your target is, or over the upper portions of a target, including the face and hands.
Here’s a newer option. Our TMC 1" LIGHT MOUNT-N-SLOT and a SureFire G2X. Two components, and they place the 200 Lumen bezel above the barrel and in front of the front sight base which eliminates all shadowing from your field of view. The cantilevered design provides more room on the hand guard and the tail cap switch under your support hand thumb.
