Does anyone know of any professionals that have a good video on how to draw/ shoot from the draw. In the military that just wasn’t something we did, but now that I may have to do it for my civilian job I would like to learn the “correct” way and practice that. No sense in developing bad habits that I will then need to train out. If I am going to build my muscle memory I want to build it right!
I will first give the obvious “Nothing will replace the use of a quality instructor” who is able to teach, monitor and correct on the spot. I will also add that many instructors have their own preference when it comes to certain nuances of gripping, drawing out and presenting the weapon out to the target. The overall goal and its execution is similar but there are often subtle differences which shooters / instructors may or may not agree upon. I will also add that there are many ways to do things and very rarely if ever will you find a one size fits all for everyone.
Having said that you should actually back your question up a bit and start with the grip on the weapon and make sure your sound there before moving forward to the drawstroke. I am a proponent of the “modern combat” or “thumbs forward” grip.
From there, you should progress into your stance. I am a fan of a “modern combat isosceles” stance and its variations.
Now you can connect the dots of draw and presentation. I will say that a beginner will be highly benefited from dry draw and presentations before making the gun go bang. I might even suggest as much as an 80/20 dry, to live fire ratio, or higher.
Having said that, I have a few video’s around that touch on certain things. I know I have a 3 part series on gripping a pistol and its progression into the “modern combat” grip on a pistol which is pretty detailed. I don’t think I have a video speaking about the drawstroke or my stance in particular but there are many out there. For a lack of better description, I will say that I use a 4 count draw with a high #3 position for the press out to #4. My latest video on my channel shows some pistol warm up drills with a slow progression of my drawstroke and firing from a slow non timed speed, up to full speed drawstroke.

I would love to go to a competent instructor. However, here in the people’s republic of Illinoistan not a lot of opportunity, especially up here around Chicago. We finally have RB1 coming, but they are doing a carbine course. I have done the McStrutors before on things and was really disappointed. I will not do it with something I may need to save a life.

You could try to find a pistol club that runs IPSC. If they have any A-GM shooters who are willing, im sure you’d benefit from a range trip with one of these guys as they can pull off consistant sub 1:00 draws from a normal belt holster used for production/single stack.

I’m almost certain the Jerry Barnhardt Burner Series has a segment on drawing. You might find that at a library. It was several tapes in the series.

That company is legit by the way if you see anything else there you like. I’ve rented from them years ago. They have gotten a bit more expensive over the years and that JB series is especially pricey.

Not at all. It is a lot easier to critique someone and offer advice from watching video as opposed to reading someones description of what they feel is the problem.

Here’s a little teaser video I did at my last place of employment. Extremely basic stuff, but it’s somewhere to start.
It is some good basic info…basics are where it’s at anyway.
I’m a pretty basic kind of guy. “Basics” and “fundamentals”, while perhaps not sexy, tend to work when you’re served up a suck sandwich better than “flashy” or “advanced”, but that’s just my .02.
I took Todd Green’s Aim Fast Hit Fast class a couple months ago, and he (in my limited experience) did a good job of explaining the mechanics of the draw and press out. The press out being the thing I needed to work on most as it was different than what I had learned in the past. I really recommend the class as it focused more on mechanics, and didn’t place so much emphasis on the tactical side of things.
Magpul has some youtube videos out there that are pretty good But you can Ask Larry Vickers in his section questions .
Not as good as being shown but he could steer you into the right direction with videos and other things to know
