Kaluban Cloak Kydex Holster Review

Let me preface this with my experience of molded/kydex holsters. I have experience with Fobus, Blackhawk, Bladetech, Sidearmor, and Safariland. I had my own issues with Fobus and Blackhawk, mainly with their durability and limited option to accommodate a weapon light. For the past year I have been using a Sidearmor holster. I really like the holster; it has withstood plenty of abuse, accommodates a weapon mounted light, and the draw/re-holster is nice and smooth. My only complaint is that it is wide and doesn’t ride close to the body. It’s fine for classes and a day at the range but impossible to conceal for daily carry. I have found similar results with Bladetech, and Safariland is a no go for concealed carry.

I looked into Raven Concealment but never made the purchase. The long wait time (I think 2-3 months) was the primary deterrent. Just when I had decided to order and put my patience to the test I found Kaluban Cloak.http://calsentllc.com/page04.html

By the pictures the holster looked very similar in style to Raven’s, the holster looked well molded, and it looked like it would be what I was looking for. The company is supposedly ran be retired MIL and current contractors. This fact, along with the price, no lead time, and the company being based here in the USA, I put in my order for a holster and two mag pouches.

My order was placed on a Monday and I had my package Saturday morning. I’ve ordered plenty of stuff online and this was one of the fastest I’ve received anything, let alone a somewhat custom order.

The Good:
The finish of the gear is great. The edges of the Kydex are all uniform, smooth, and even. The mold is well done as well; when the gun is holstered there is a definite “click” to tell you the gun is completely in. The coyote Kydex is thick (.093), so there is no give in the walls of the holster or pouches. I haven’t changed or messed with the belt loops, but the Philips screw looks easy enough to change out.

The holster was intended for a G19 w/X300. A plus was that they made the holster to fit for any Glock with a similar sized frame no matter the length of the slide. I was happy with this because now I don’t need to order a second holster if I want to carry my G17.

I was also surprised to find that the holster will retain my gun even with the light not mounted. Holsters I have used in the past require the light to retain the gun, this one work fine with or without it, with no rattle or wiggle. I’ll most likely never need to use the holster without a light, but I like that there’s the option.

The holster keeps the gun right against the body, which I was looking for. It reduces printing so much that I’d feel comfortable wearing the holster with any light jacket or sweatshirt. Even with just a t-shirt it does a pretty good job of breaking up the shape of the gun.

The Bad:
The mold and fit of the holster was super tight when I first got it. If my pull wasn’t completely straight out of the holster, with the right cant (10 degrees), the gun required a lot of force to draw. I pulled the gun in and out repeatedly attempting to break it in and loosen it up a bit. The repeated drawing and re-holstering did loosen it up, but it’s still tighter than what I’m used to. Again, this is a pro and a con. I know the gun is never going to come out of the holster unless I want it to, however a decent pull is still required to draw the gun. I think the holster will loosen a bit more as time goes on, I’m sure it won’t loosen so much that it loses its ability to hold the gun, but with time I think it will get to a more desired tension.

My only other complaint concerns re-holstering. There is a “fin” on the outside edge of the holster in order to completely cover the trigger. Sometimes the bezel of the light catches on the “fin”. It’s not a major issue, and something I’m sure with repeated use will disappear as I get more accustomed to the holster.

Conclusion:
I have spent limited time with this holster so I have no idea how it will stand up to long term use. The holster looks like it should last. I know some people have had issues with Raven’s belt loops breaking so this is where I would expect any damage to occur, if any.

Overall I’m very happy with the gear from Kaluban Cloak. Both the holster and mag pouches are well done and I have no hesitation in recommending them as a company that sells quality gear.

Looks good, nice review. Looking over their sight, I like the fact that they offer straight drop holsters. I’ve owned several Raven holsters, and still have a few, but they don’t really work for me. I like the concept, but I guess my waistline isn’t large enough for them to fit right. These seem to not be as wide, and that is a good thing in my book. I may have to pick one up for some T&E.

Looks pretty good. How do you order? Looked over their website and couldn’t figure it out.

Excellent review.

They look exactly like raven holsters but with non-modular attachment. Raven’s also have that lip to cover the trigger that the light catches on as well. I’ll definitely check them out for my next holster since they’re cheaper and no lead time.

Looks like there’s a few companies helping meet the demand for Ravenesque kydex. Cool.

Thanks, for sharing . Looks nice!

This should please some people. I remember there being a thread where folks were pretty bent out of shape that this wasn’t an option from manufacturers, so maybe that crowd can find some solace here.

Till,
No mention on the site of the mag products; by the pics it looks like yours are the same manuf., are they? If so do they offer a double?

I have a Kaluban holster also, I ordered it because I couldn’t find a holster to fit my G21 with the M1913 rail. I talked to one of the guys there and they asked me to measure the gun and send the measurements to them. I ordered the holster on Monday and had it Thursday, he told me he wouldn’t take the money off my account until I tried it and liked it. It works great! I have them making me a holster for a G19 with the TLR1, I’ve only dealt with Eugene and he is a solid guy.

The difficulty to remove is primarily coming from the mold around the ejection port. I’d recommend taking the wife’s hair dryer and bumping that out. You’ll notice a big improvement.

their wait times will only go up from here…

Your review and the reasonable price got me interested in these holsters. I was digging around for more info on the 'net and found this thread on Calguns. The manufacturer posts some good info about the holsters: Calguns.net

In this case it is due to the light. If the lights removed the pull is about perfect. I may attempt to loosen it up down the road if it doesn’t with repeated drawing.

The mag pouches aren’t listed, I just asked if they were possible and Eugene delivered. They also make AR mag pouches, but I have no experience with those.

How much are the mag pouches?

Plain steel philips head screws? Really? :frowning:

In the Calguns thread, the manufacturer says the screws are stainless steel:

Alecks, please don’t take offense to this; I am pasting a response from a customer in Florida that also just got one of our holsters for his HK USP45.
". . . Anyway, if I may suggest something. I’d like to replace the belt loop screwdriver into an allen type. In all honesty, it feels better than it looks. I can feel the quality of this holster just by holding it. Looks like it is one of those things called “to hell and back reliability!”

On his last note, our first gen holsters did come with black coated brass Chicago screws with allen wrench. However, operators from jungle operations and maritime applications requested that we use stainless steel instead. Perhaps we will offer the allen wrench setup as an option. It does increase the price of the hardware almost 10X. A pair of SS is 23 cents, while the allen wrench setup is over $2.
It looks good. My only issue just looking at the pics are the belt loops look too big. I looks like there would be alot of play on the belt. Do they make them with less bulk to them.

Till, have you tried fitting a G34/35 in it just for S&G’s? That would be a major plus for me if I could use all 3 in one holster.

There is no play with the belt loops. I usually wear a 1.75 inch rigger type belt and the loops fit perfect.

I don’t have a G34/35, I know a G17 fits well though.

I ordered one of these for my Glock 19 a couple weeks ago and have been very pleased with it. I had been using a Comp-Tac OWB holster, which was OK, but was looking for something that fit more snug against my side, and didn’t want to wait for a Raven. I ordered it on a Thursday afternoon and it was on my doorstep Saturday morning.

I wore it for a short pistol marksmanship course this weekend and was pleased how it performed, retained well and was still very natural to draw. I think it’s a great holster for the money, and I’m happy with it.

From an operators perspective i couldnt be happier about this. I absolutely hate having to ratf*%k through our maintainers toolboxes to find some obscure size allen key every time i want to do anything with a weapon accessory not on a throw mount or to swap out mounts on this or that. Flathead or phillips head screwdrivers may not be able to crank down as hard as allen fittings but when it is between a screwdriver fitting or having stuff fall apart or get stripped out I’ll take 10 ft/lbs less torque anyday. Besides that how hard do you need to tighten a dang holster mount anyway? (blue Loktite…)
