Me, personally, I refer to 308 ARs as 308 ARs. Even calling them AR10s is inaccurate because A. It is trademarked by Armalite in name only and B. They are too different from the actual AR10.
I wish Armalite took their AR10s more seriously. The AR10A was a positive step but they need to get rid of the FA and well…
But on topic, I am very happy with my Rock Creek barrel. Now I need a nightforce.
Not sure what your budget is, or if weight is a major concern, but I have the new Vortex 4.5-27x gen ii razor that has been extremely impressive. The downside is weight, and being able to find a mil/mil version. Seeing 6.5CM hits on steel past 1,000 yards was too easy. I would definitely recommend it to anyone that isn’t counting ounces.
I am curious what the major issue is with Armalite. The FA doesn’t really bother me. I’ve never used it, but it doesn’t get in the way of anything. I guess it adds a tiny bit of weight is all.
The only other thing I can think of is what I have heard about the bolts being made out of a type pf steel that some people don’t consider a good choice for that application. I haven’t fired enough rounds through my AR-10A to notice any issues, though.
The FA is problematic because you probably don’t need to force feed a .308 round somewhere it doesn’t want to go.
Then there is the bolt issue.
It’s like they have this attitude of “yeah we’re Armalite…whatever”
They should drop the B pattern, ditch the FA, get on board with the Bolts, get more common with SR25 pattern stuff, and they could make a killing as a mid level 308 brand. If I had the Armalite name, I would make Armalite stuff. AR-10s, AR-180s, probably drop the pistol line, and so forth.
Armalite is name checked in so many punk and 80s songs and I know folks that buy their lowers just for retro builds. But that’s my opinion.
As for my optics budget well I’m between pauper and plasma donor.
I figure I will get what I want in a few years.
