John Stryker Meyer - MACV-SOG, on SR show

Great show with John Stryker Meyer, legendary member of MACV-SOG.

I listened to the entire show. Outstanding. I’m always interested in anything 'Nam era SOF, especially SOG. I’m also doing research for a follow up to my thriller novella “Old And Angry” that includes a segment the protagonist has a flashback to his SOG days. This show was helpful.

“John Stryker Meyer is a decorated Green Beret who served two tours in Vietnam (1968-1969 and 1969-1970) with the Military Assistance Command, Vietnam – Studies and Observations Group(MACV-SOG). Enlisting in 1966, he earned his Special Forces tab in 1967 and joined Spike Team Idaho, later leading Recon Team Idaho at Command and Control North (CCN) in Da Nang. Meyer’s missions took him across borders into denied areas, facing intense combat—including surviving multiple gunshot wounds and leading his team through impossible odds. After Vietnam, he served with the 10th Special Forces Group, then transitioned to civilian life as a journalist and author. He hosts the podcast, SOG Cast, and preserves the legacy of special operations veterans.”

He did a series of shows with Jocko, well worth listening to.

Just read “On the Ground” reading “Across the Fence” now.

Another SOG man on SR. It’s a long one, yet I wanted to hear all of it.

Henry Dick Thompson - MACV-SOG Operator, Codename “Dynamite” | SRS

Henry L. (Dick) Thompson, Ph.D., is a retired U.S. Army Lieutenant Colonel and legendary MACV-SOG operator known by the codename “Dynamite.” Serving as a recon team leader from 1968 to 1970, he led over 20 high-risk black operations deep into enemy territory in Laos, Cambodia, and North Vietnam during the Vietnam War’s secret campaigns, earning a reputation for bravery in brutal firefights and hand-to-hand combat.

After 21 years of military service, including roles in Special Forces, Airborne, and Ranger units, Thompson founded High Performing Systems, Inc. in 1984, where he serves as President and CEO, providing leadership solutions, training, and assessments for corporate, military, law enforcement, and firefighters in high-stress decision-making. A psychologist, Mensa member, and Ironman triathlete, he authored, among other books, the bestselling “SOG Codename Dynamite” series, including “A MACV-SOG 1-0’s Personal Journal” (2023), sharing firsthand accounts of combat psychology and spiritual warfare.

Thompson advocates for mental resilience, veteran support, and applying combat lessons to everyday leadership.

I’ve seen North Vietnam listed as one of SOG’s “destinations” but have never read a recounting of a mission there (I’ve read a couple SOG books and articles). Sure, plenty of runs into Laos and Cambodia, but never actually North Vietnam. Did they really pull missions there? Or maybe it was South Vietnamese-only missions into North Vietnam?

If war was official, like it was with north Vietnam, would you need a force that you could disavow like they needed in Cambodia and laos?

I would think you could have sent uniformed men into north Vietnam that had the same skills and training as SOG? Like just normal special forces.
