i felt the same way when i took the dremel to this APL to make it fit in some X300-compatible kydex holsters. by the way, i agree about the locking mechanism latch. i think it should have some sort of detent that keeps it in place more securely, and not rely just on cam tension/friction.

I ordered one today so I am curious about your experience with the APL. I am confused about cutting the latch. Did that stop it from opening when slamming the gun down?
My interpretation is the shorter lever doesn’t have the mass to shake loose when slamming the gun down now, almost like the leverage of the longer lever caused it to open from inertia when the host gun comes to a sudden stop. Is that the issue?
DWood,
I should have clarified. It only happens if you catch the latch on something, but with the way I slam my gun around, its bound to happen. If you hit a ledge with the side of the light and the latch caught the ledge… by by light.
MM, Agree, a secondary lock would have been a nice addition, though this accomplished the same end.
Nice work on yours.
Thanks goteron, I guess I will be cutting my latch on Wednesday when it arrives.
MM, where did you mod the APL to fit an X300 holster?
i made the body behind the bezel cylindrical - look at my pic and compare it to goteron’s.
Wow I always thought that the APL was boxy on purpose (i.e. large electronics, etc) and always turned me off from getting one… Makes you wonder why they decided to make it so big…
dwood,
Be very careful cutting the latch, the metal does not bend well and you will break it. I used a small drill bit as a radius guide and an arbor press…
Maybe there is a way to do something else? Secondary screw…?
moved to trash per OP’s request.
