I’m looking at a nice PEO slide and various press releases over the course of the last year as I look at my build. MY objectives are for a DMR variant, DI, with a great deal of parts compatablity with the many DI AR parts out there. Compatablity is for soursing of repair parts in a pinch.
LOOSE Requirements:
18", 1-7 twist, (Pined Ban State:( )
Free float rail
Fixed Stock (Again Ban State:mad: )
Fully Ambi, I’m a lefty amoung other reasons.
Thoughts:
POF Gen III Lower (Guards for the mag release on the left side)
VLTOR VIS Monolithic Upper Reciever - Rifle
Centurion Arms MK-12 barrel
or Noveske 18.5 SPR 5.56mm Barrel - Black
PWS or PRI Brake
Geissele Non-adjustable Combat Trigger
LMT or G&R BCG
Now i’m so farout in the sticks of NY that I can’t just pop into the local shop and look over all these parts and have never seen any of these parts in person. the end result would be replacing my “Low grade” test mule with a duty quality rifle (although still a test/training mule).
Sounds groovy. The idea of an integrated upper reciever/rail seems cool and very stable. I’d be worried that if you ding up your handguard you’re stuck with the damage or have to replace your entire upper. Probably a non-issue with normal use, just sayin’
Your desire for parts compatibility would be one reason for possibly skipping the monolithic upper. You will likely end up with your optic mounted on the standard portion of the upper anyhow.
I’m LOOKING at the VLTOR VIS for several reasons. One is that on my current DM Rifle, and many others you see, the optic is forward mounted in such a way that it in effect it sits over the forward rail. Good examples are the LaRue SPR mounts or any of the cantilever mounts you see for the Aimpoint.
The LMT Monolithic Rail Platform (MRP) would be another option and they are in stock at Rainier, although not the 18". hummmm
Ok then, how does the MRP compare with the VIS? I got it with the quick barrel changes and all, but I’m not going to be swapping barrels around so thats not a selling point to me. I’m tracking that only MRP barrels can be used on the LMT, while the VIS will let you use any AR barrel. Correct?
Any comments on the POF Gen III lowers or their resemblance to the MagPul lowers?
Ok a better man then I shall evry be would seem to support the VIS uppers:
N4 Light Carbine, Low Profile, with VIS
N4 Light Carbine, Basic, with VIS
N4 Light Recce Basic with VIS
ect…
While the VIS is not the first one piece upper receiver for the AR-15/M16 family, it is the first design that retains the use of standard barrels, as well as a removable bottom rail section.
awe crap here it is:
–The 18" SPR 5.56mm Upper with VIS
–Noveske 18 inch SPR SS barrel, with OPS INC 12th model collar shelf in the correct location, 1 in 7" twist
–Extended feed ramps
–VIS 12" monolithic upper
–Pinned 17-4 gas block
–Intermediate length gas tube
–Auto bolt carrier
–Shot peened and MP tested bolt
–Forged charging handle
–Vortex flash hider
–Optional BUIS (Troy Back Up Iron Sights)
Sights, optics, and accessories can be added. This is a complete upper, test fired, and ready to be installed on your complete lower.
Since the development of the 18" SPR barrel, there has not been a proper gas port placement to work with the desirable barrel length. Now there is a perfect combination, introducing the “Intermediate Length” gas system. Developed by Vltor Weapon Systems, and perfected by Noveske Rifleworks, the intermediate length gas system offers the ideal gas port placement, providing maximum accuracy and reliability. Overall, the intermediate length gas system (1.5" shorter then a rifle length) was developed from feedback from end users and industry professionals. Accuracy and reliability are the best characteristics of the intermediate length gas system.
The Noveske VIS SPR upper arrived today. It is much lighter then I expected. I think I may have to find a Pre-94 Colt lower (Grant?) so I can mount a UBR stock. I think a PRS will be to rear heavy. I’ll have to tinker with the Sully stock that also arrived, maybe I can find a medium point.
