I have a friend who has asked me what suppressor he should get.
This will be his first suppressor and he is primarily a hunter.
He says this will live mostly on a SiG Cross in 6.5CM though he does have other rifles.
I’m thinking Ti for lightweight and the best NR possible because he probably won’t use hearing protection. I know the market has exploded, what would you recommend? I don’t want to ignore reliability/company reputation.
Yes, I’ve talked to him about electronic hearing, but he finds them uncomfortable on a prolonged basis. And i’ve shown him the difference gel cups make. On a side note, or their any In-Ear devices worth-while?
I’ve used a Thunderbeast Ultra 7 on several rifles for 6 or 7 years now. I’ll be adding another eventually. I shoot without ear pro while hunting and have zero discomfort. They’re pretty light. 8 oz? There’s lots of companies making cans now and many more on the way according to SHOT show reports but I really like tried and true. TBAC are a known quantity. High quality, light, quiet, repeatable and a great reputation.
For in-ear electronics, hands down Otto is the best. Pricey though at $450-500. Walkers work at a quarter of the price. If I was a rangemaster wearing them all day everyday I’d pop for the better pro of the Ottos, for occasional shots while hunting I’m sticking with Walkers.
ETA: I’m not up to speed on the latest cans. My hunting rifle can is a silencerco omega. Light, relatively inexpensive, and it works. I’m sure there are probably “better” choices, but honestly it’s hard to make a “bad” choice. Gun mufflers ain’t that complicated. Better vs worse is largely a small range of difference.
Might be a case of what you want versus what you can get. With the $200 tax going away seems like more people entered the NFA game suppressor wise. Makes sense on the cans <$800, but the best of the best over $1k seem to still be siting on shelves at least at my LGS.
I use a Rex .264 MG7k on my 6.5 bolt gun. It’s the older model with 6 baffles. I like it. It’s lightweight, and about as short as you can go and still work pretty well on a 6.5cm. Buying today, I’d lean more toward an Otter Creek titanium 6.5 can, though I don’t have experience with that exact model. Hydrogen, I think it’s called. I’ve used some of their other cans, and they sound good, especially on a bolt gun. The Griffin Armament Sportsman Ultralight is tempting, too. It uses a baffle that is less concerned with backpressure; more focused on hunting and bolt guns than their other cans. I own examples of their cans on both sides of the backpressure vs sound bias, and they have a tendency to be strong performers in sound reduction. There’s also Thunderbeast Arms…they’re renowned for their lightweight and effective bolt gun cans in the precision world.
As you probably know, backpressure shouldn’t be considered at all with a bolt gun can. I’d avoid products that focus on that angle for this application.
If he’s hauling it through brush, he might appreciate a short model.
Talking to a buddy last night… he mentioned that his pal who works at a gun store in Scottsdale, AZ said the NFA business actually was slightly slower than before the first of the year.
My local store’s case didn’t have a single vacant spot in the Suppressor case of about 40 cans. Kind of strange.
SIG Cross? It will have a built in taper at the muzzle, so I would buy a CGS Hyperion if a direct thread Ti can with maximum sound reduction on a bolt gun is the goal. The CGS Hyperion is built with a taper on the direct thread to mate up to a 5/8X24 with a tapered shoulder.
I’m personally very pleased with my CAT JL, it is very effective on my 6.5CM.
Just the opposite here. I stopped in today while in town and there was a lot of empty spaces in the suppressor cases. The owner told me he has a big shipment arriving next week, though. He said most approvals are in a week and a half even though he has a few guys waiting since September and October.
