I’m looking for a Micrometer that measure’s the depth of a firing pin strike. The one that I have seen in the past had a dummy round that goes into a chamber. A primer is then inserted, and the weapon is discharged to strike the round.
You can then remove the round and take this Mic to check the depth of the firing pin strike.
I have already checked with:
Brownells
Forster Products
Sinclair
Midway
and Various other resources… and even check to see if they knew where to get them… NO LUCK
Measuring the “strike” is difficult, as it will depend on the primer hardness. To check for maximum protrusion, which is an indication of strike potential, you can use any snap gauge or a cheap tool designed specifically for the job, like this.
Checking maximum protrusion will give you an idea of what is possible, to check for function, I have used a deprimed case with the primer pocket filled with modelers clay or prototyping wax… and believe it or not, to see if the force of the strike is solid, I usually just slip a piece of nylon rod down the barrel, hold it straight up and pull the trigger.

I’ve already looked at that tool. It will not work due to the fact that it needs to be done while in the rifle and the the hammer strikes the firing pin. (it has ot be very specific on it being in hte rifle with all preasure’s and spings of the lower receiver parts). Also, I believe that the man I spoke with at Brownells Tech Dept said it would not work with a 5.56 / .223 platform.
The strike depth has to meet a certain Spec, so it needs to be very exact. I have seen one in the past but the company that used to make it had went out of business about 10 years ago.
The tool looks like a “U” shaped Mic. On one side there is a place for the casing to be placed, and on the other side is almost like a needle head to Mic the depth.
Couldn’t you use an appropriately sized anvil mic to do that?

Its almost the same as that Point Mic on the bottom right, but like I said it has a holder for the casing.
