If you own a LMT 308

I have had mine for A few months now and absolutely love it. I’m not concerned about the weight. If I want light and fast I have an SBR for that. For my purpose I would most definitely purchase another one. Ive put about 200 rounds through mine so far with no issues. Currently running a Vortex 4-16 FFP and offset irons. The gun shoots really well. Best group so far has been just over 1 inch with Federal Gold Medal Match 168 grain. Going to try it with Hornady Amax’s here soon.

I’ve had my MWS for over 3 years. I do not keep records, but I estimate nearly 4,000 rounds through the file.
Never had an issue with various kinds of ammo. I have 16" CL and 18" SS barrels (both 308). For accuracy, both of my barrels like 168 and 175 FGMM.
Never had to use the warranty. My bolt has the older single ejector and some finish flaked off the carrier. Some people cried about the flaky finish, but I never had an issue. Just shot the hell out of it, and wiped down the BCG after each trip to the range.
I have used my rifle in 4 precision rifle matches. Maybe not as accurate as custom bolt rifles, but the MWS never let me down. Last match, I had first round hits at targets out to 875 yards.
The weight has never been an issue either. In some of the matches, you are required to hump your rifle and gear around all day… never an issue.
Yes, I would not hesitate to get another one.

If you find it heavy, maybe you need to work on your other guns.

That is the silliest, most ignorant & regurgitated line when people complain about weight. Clearly LMT realized the problem, as they came out with the LM8 (which is still too heavy for what the rifle is). There is zero reason why a 16" semi needs to weigth that much. Clearly you have never had to carry a combat load, nor even had to carry a rifle ALL DAY. Lighter = faster on target and more agile.

Then again, weight doesn’t matter when your gun lives between a safe and a bench shooting at paper. Or maybe , they just can’t handle the recoil of that stout round, known as .308…

I have an MRP with multiple barrels so I love the LMT monolithic concept. I’d like to get an LM8 and have the barrel dimpled, that would make the weight acceptable for me.

Maybe you missed the ;)?..

Re lack of ‘combat load’ experience - you assume a lot ~ but thanks for your condescension.

Hey turrent…Check your fire. I don’t know who pissed in your Wheaties, but this is the third or fourth thread I’ve read where you posted some crap where you apparently believe you’re the only one on this site who is or has been in the Military.

Not to mention the posts are not on topic and are derogatory like you just strolled over from BARFcom.

No one pissed in anything… its an old and stupid phrase that gets annoying. There is no need for that here…

Did you even read the thread? I have pretty much stayed out of it… but apparantly LMT’s marketing department resides here… as anything that is not 100% glowing is deemed and “crapping” on them.

Weight is a REAL issue for many shooters. Its has ZERO to do with not being able to carry the rifle, as 99% of the time these rifles are shot from the prone off a bipod, pack or barrier. Position shooting and unconvential setups are a real bitch when your gun + optic weights 15lbs+ and you need to be in position for extended periods of time. Or when you need to have the rifle at the low ready or covering a sector. But then again… maybe I just need to go to the gym 7 days a week instead of 4…right?

I didn’t say or infer that I’m the only one in the Military, so I would appreciate if you stop putting words into my mouth. Feel free to dissagree with me. I don’t seem to recall you posting anywhere in this thread previously. You are just trying to troll me into an argument and It’s not going to happen.

This is a discussion that has been beaten to death on MANY sites, including your Barfcom. Typicaly when someone says “go lift weights” or something of the like… they have little to no value to add to the discussion. Do you have anything meaningful to say other than trolling me? The dude made a comment about the weight… how is that off subject when we are talking about the MWS?

While I agree that everyone is entitled to their opinion, your reply does not address a SINGLE one of the OP’s questions. It would be much more conducive if you actually responded to his questions.

Why are you digging up old dirt?.. Voodoo made his point clear on page 1… there is no reason to quote this back into relivence.

If you read the OP, he said would you buy another? If you must know, I gave him very viable alternatives that MANY shooters have went to after trying the MWS.

See my post #22 above. Weight has never been an issue in matches, shooting off barricades, and humping with it all day. I’m definitely not a meathead either.
Sure there a lighter options, but listed weights for SR25 and OBR are not much lighter.
Weights pulled from the Hide (unloaded without optics):
SR-25 EMC - 8.4 lbs
LMT MWS - 9.5 lbs
OBR - 9.7 lbs

Are you the only match shooter out there? If you want to start talking about matches or what guys in combat are using (besides the britts)…you will find the MWS is not near the top of those lists.

The problem is not just the weight, but the ballance. It is a very muzzle heavy weapon…It is very unballenced and for some shooters like me, don’t like it.

But since the brits use it, it just invalidates years of experince and people who shoot them , along with the competition.

I simply reported you TurretGunner because your being an Assclown.

Knock it off.

Weight’s got about 6 different solutions to it, and all sides can find about as many ways of expressing their thoughts on the matter WITHOUT needless backbiting.

Keyword: NEEDLESS. It’s past needed, past ludicrous, teetering on plaid.

Hi Jack,
A bit late to this party, sorry, but just now caught this.

Why is this? (assuming we’re talking .308 as well).
While appreciating the convenience of the 16" barrel I don’t mind the extra weight etc if the trade-off is worth it.
So if I read you correctly I wouldn’t really be gaining much from swapping a 16" for a 20" barrel on an AR10 (armalite) upper? (which I was actually considering until I read this…based on both barrels being the same make/material - apples to apples).

Thanks - Gene.

ps - not trying to detour this tread…

If I may while we wait for F2S to reply to your question;

As I understand it, you are gaining negligible amounts of muzzle velocity between 16" and 20", with the actual numbers depending on the ammo being used. Additionally, while the added time in barrel would give you a little under half a twist prior to exit, you’ve likely stabilized the round as much as you’re going to by then (1:10 on the LMT).

A 20" barrel is cumbersome. 4" doesn’t seem like too much (I would know, my wife reminds me often…) but when you’re firing unsupported, or from difficult supported positions, it makes a lot of difference.

Some folks will argue the minutes all day. These are the same ones who will dimple a barrel to reduce 4oz. And that’s great, I know the perfectionist feeling of wanting everything just right. However, the MWS and similar semi-auto 7.62 guns were built to fill a role. I think our friends across the drink are using it correctly, a Marksman rifle. If you need the extra 170fps, if the twist rate doesn’t fit your needs, etc. it may be more appropriate to go with a bolt gun.

I love my LMT, very accurate, but it is a heavy pig.
Data from a few GunSmiths revealed that each additional 2" of barrel is equal to about 4.4 ounces of weight.
Do not know about the warranty, have not used it. I have yet to hear a complaint about LMT.
The MWS308 came with sights, rail covers one mag and a torque wrench
I would buy another, I also highly recommend the LMT

I have had an LMTMWS for about a year and half, bench rest via irons with ‘old eyes’ put three shots into a thumbnail sized ring at 100 yds when I first shot it: short distance for a .308 but it says more about the accuracy of the gun then the myopic shooter  Its had minimal use over the last year, maybe about 1k rds, but have had no issues to date. Still researching an optic for it…damn time flies!

I purchased my LMT MWS used from a close friend. The rifle is heavy, and I wouldn’t want to lug it around. However, since I do most of my shooting at the range or on my property in the country, I’m only really carrying it from my car to where I’m shooting that day. The rifle I purchased came with iron sights, TangoDown rail covers, a magazine, and an instruction manual.

I have not had to use the warranty or contact LMT for any reason other than parts availability, specifically, additional barrels. If the price was right, I was going to sell the 20’’ CL barrel that my friend had installed and purchase a 16’‘. This plan never materialized, and I am thoroughly satisfied with the 20’‘. As to accuracy, I’ve been able to consistently make 1.5’‘-2’’ 10 shot groups using quality ammunition. I’ve never had the chance to try to group with an MWS that had a SS barrel installed. Would I purchase one again? Absolutely, but then again the LMT’s drawbacks, specifically the weight, don’t come into play with the kind of shooting I do.

I have had my MWS for a while now and I bought it used. It looked like it had been shot once and put away. Mine came with the iron sights, rail panels and one KAC marked metal magazine. I have put 5-600 rounds through it, no reliability issues at all. I don’t mind the weight as I wont be carrying it around. I have only put it on paper out to 200yards and I have found it to be plenty accurate for my needs. I wish I could shoot it more, I have the dies for .308, plenty of bullets and brass and primers and I just found some Varget. I am going through a rough patch in life (divorce) so I hope I will be able to keep my MWS when it is all said and done. I have been very pleased with the rifle and I hope to take it further in the future. I would love to have another one, I would probably top it with that big Trijicon offering. Good luck with your purchase.
