I’m trying to duplicate (or is it “replicate”?) some VTAC drills (i.e. 9-Hole Barricade, Triple Threat Rifle Drill, etc) using a NextLevel SIRT AR-bolt in my basement.
Currently, I set my android phone or iPad’s timer apps to 10-15 seconds when doing some VTAC drills.
I’m curious if, besides these form of timers, are there other means to time yourself performing dry-fire drills? From what I gather, timers work based on the decibel produced by the shots.
At 40-yrs-young, I’m not spry enough to quickly reach for the timer.:o
Apologies if these has been discussed before. Thank you in advance
Those drills are designed to work specific skill sets.
How are your presentation times and things like that? It only takes a few runs on those drills to learn them then it goes back to fundamentals and running the gun. So dry fire in those areas will be easier to manage and more productive.
I need to work on presentations.
Right now my tendinitis on support arm is not helping.
I did maybe 10 minutes on experimenting on doing VTAC’s El Presidente. Started with 15 seconds. Hitting the timer, spin/turn to face target, engage the targets, change mag, engage target…I started around approx 10 seconds.
As I found ways to get timer closer from my starting position, I decreased the timer. Eventually placing the timer on the step of an A-Frame ladder.
My experiments revealed my weakness on sitting the magazine into the magazine well. I tend to fumble.
I have to learn a better grip.
I progress from dropping mags on a bare floor to a basket with a pillow. No sense damaging a perfectly good magazine.
To simulate the bolt locking to the rear, I substituted switching to Safe. So after the reload, I simulate the bolt going forward by switching back to Fire.
I’ll further experiment by moving back far away from the target.
I’ll have to experiment with Surefire’s app and see if there is way to set the timer to Start randomly, and give me only 7-10 seconds of drill time. May have to contact the app developer.
I use my shot pro timer and set it to random start time with a par time beep to work against. Foremost you should obviously focus on your fundamentals and draw to first shot times from different stances and mag change times. Until your consistently proficient with these things i wouldn’t burn up a bunch of my dry fire time with anything els.
