The Department of Homeland Security and U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement announced they have identified more than 10,000 foreign students allegedly working for ‘highly suspect’ employers under the Optional Practical Training (OPT) program. Investigations revealed empty offices, residential addresses, and post office boxes listed as worksites, as well as overseas-managed roles in violation of U.S. training requirements. Officials say these cases involve potential visa and employment fraud, intellectual property theft, and other criminal activity, and likely represent only a fraction of the abuse occurring nationwide.
“Our nation will not tolerate security threats originating from the foreign student program,” Lyons said, adding that ICE investigations have uncovered cases involving alleged visa fraud, employment fraud, intellectual property theft, financial scams, and other criminal activity involving individuals accused of abusing student visa status."
