I want to build or buy a semi-auto .308 for precision shooting. I have read DocGKR threads on the .308 and feel this is the caliber I am looking for. I have also been watching and searching this site for info as well as talked to an industry professional from this site. To say I have confused myself with research would be and understatement. The recommendation for the dealer was for an FNH but hen I need to have it machined for a FS or Can and the only mags that fit are the OE mags plus tear down is not field friendly, but it is maybe the most accurate of the rifles in this class. That being said I like the apparent versatility and interchangability of parts of the AR with an AR based .308, but I am confused as to who makes the good (read durable, accurate, and dependable) parts. I build my own ARs so I am sure I can put together a .308 if it is better to mix and match to get the quality ans this allows me to build it with money available over time. But if someone makes one that is GTG out of the box I am open to suggestions. Thanks in advance
I was looking at the DPMS .308, but because I already have two AR platform weapons, I decided to try out the PTR-91 US clone of the HK 91 battle rifle. I’ll be watching this topic as it evolves to see if I am going to make a change as well!
I own a DPMS .308 and am happy with it. Most agree that the .308 DPMS guns are good weapons, including some of the SMEs on here.
The .308 AR’s are not interchangeable like the the AR15.
While some people have mixed and matched some parts without problems I would not, as there are some significant differences.
My friend has a DPMS and he likes it. I got to fire it and it seemed okay. Didnt know if my shots were accurate since we were shooting a shot up target, but my rounds did hit paper. Personally I would probably go for KAC or Noveske, but they are either not available, or way expensive. Don’t know how good are the other brands of 308, but I’m sure there’s a few reviews on them.
I know that there are at least 2 variations. Armalite AR10 and DPMS version and those are not interchangable but what about inside the variations. Example DPMS lower with LPK matched to Noveske uppers? Also which mags fit which lowers? I found a Noveske lower I know they are tops in 5.56 what about 7.62? Also what about parts availability? Sorry for so many questions just trying to get it right the first time.
The N6 is compatible with the Armalite AR-10. Both use the Armalite pattern mags.
DPMS and KAC use the KAC pattern mags.
Only the N6 and AR-10 uppers are interchangeable.
I’d planned on purchasing the parts “AR upper and lower, krieger barrel” and doing the machine work myself. I purchased two KAC 20 round mags about three weeks ago. I about shit when the lady said 260.00. “I owed an associate for 300 casings for my 338 lm”. A deal is a deal, and this was the deal.
130.00 per mag is, well you know. I’m think im going to stick with my FN FAL 308 project. Started on it a couple of years ago and lost interest when I couldn’t get it right.
Has a MagPul adjustable stock, Bull barreled. The gun was a mix of parts I got somewhere and put it and its two brothers together with. Lots of machine work went into the rifle to make the stock work. Used a bolt on rail from DSA and have a super sniper 10x on it for T&E.
It trash’s match casings, “need to slow the bolt down considerably”, The trigger pull is very long, and at least 10 pounds pull, with no sweet spot noted. Stoned/Polished the shit out of it. Thought I could live with the pounds/pull, no can do.
Hmmmmm after reading my own post I think Ive pretty much talked myself and you out of an FN project.
Good luck on your project.
Dirk
I’ve got an DPMS LR308A3 that has been 100% with DPMS and CProducts mags; I use an IOR 4-14x50 in a larue mount and its scary accurate. A bloated pig, with its 24" bull barrel but scary freakin accurate none the less. I’m gonna have the barrel reprofiled into an M110-ish and maybe change the furniture around, but its good to go as is for long range work as-is
I’d advise the guys looking at PTRs to read up on the issues they are having. IMO they suck; and I’ve owned a bunch of G3 clones, PTRs included. The G3, even when done right, cant hold a candle to an AR in 308 in any category other than reliability.
That said a good G3 is rock-solid dependable. And it takes a sear pack ![]()
LaRue OSR?
Just another option I did not see mentioned…
Not cheap, but ready to go out of the box…
I will be looking into it in the future… seems like a quality weapon.
The Larue is very expensive and all up front money. I love LaRue products but the questions about the OSR are which mags does it take and it is a brand new design. In my experience any new design even by the best companies not just in firearms needs a couple of good years of widespread use to get the “kinks” worked out. I just don’t have the money to be the tester. That being said if LaRue want to send me one I will be happy to test it for them at no charge; I will even pay for the ammo! LOL:D
Has it been released?
I have a KAC SR25 Light Match. I had an OpsInc muzzle brake installed. A Leupold LR 3.5x10 M1 scope is also mounted. It’s capable of better than 1 MOA accuracy. Overall, I’m happy with it. I agree that they’re very expensive, but I bought mine in '98 before the runup in price. KAC mags are also very expensive, but you can use cheaper DPMS and now CProduct mags as alternates.
