How accurate would my rifle be at 400 yards with iron sights and M855?

Very nice shooting Eurodriver.

I got my “new eyes” courtesy of the War fighter refractive eye clinic at Womack! Vision came out to be 20/12 :dance3:

:pI need to play this game more often. I never shoot at distances like that enough.

Maybe a thread with everybody posting their targets from a given distance should be started? A little friendly competition?

And I’m not up for putting beers on the line, I could not afford to pay up what I’d end up owing.

Great stuff. My favorite casual shooting is laying down in my buddies cow pasture and throwing a rifle over an old ALICE pack and ringing the steel 20x30" plate we have at 300+ yards with irons.

I pick up my BCM 20 inch A4 today… I’ll let you know how it goes!

If you want a challenge, see what kind of groups you can shoot at 400 yards with XM193 ball.

I just picked it up. Tomorrow I will shoot it at 400 yds. We’ll see what a rifle can do.

Euro that is awesome shooting. It shows that the hard work you put in is paying off. I need to try this next time I shoot as well. M855 is 62 grain right? Sorry for my ignorance but I’m drawing a blank right now. Hope to see more pictures of the sticks and groups soon.

I know it’s a way different subject but I get weird looks from the crew served mini and .50 cal machine guns I use for work that sports no optics or any aiming sites at all. Of course I got 2,700 rounds for the mini and 600 rounds for the .50 to make my hits using Kentucky windage from the Pavehawk.

It was another windy day today, ridiculously so actually, but I went to check my 300 meter zero anyways. The wind was gusting heavy at times so I waited it out and did some dry firing at the 300 meter steel. Shot some PMC Bronze 55 grain .223 fmj today.

Once the wind slowed a bit I carefully squeezed off four rounds. I could hear the thud of the rounds impacting but I wasn’t convinced whether it was the steel or the mound behind it. I was pleasantly surprised to find a nice group measuring just under 4".

You weren’t kidding about the wind, that looks to be full value as well. Nice shooting. And are you doing this through an Aimpoint and with MBUS sights? Do you enjoy making things difficult or what?

I’ve tried this with a nearly stock (MOE+ grip was the only change) 6920. With a 15+ MPH full value wind, not one shot it the 45% IPSC target. Shooting of a bench with no front or rear support didn’t help but those are just excuses!

JS-Maine and Eurodriver that is some excellent shooting! Love seeing people do this.

Thanks and yeah the wind tested my patience! Full value and gusting at 30-35 mph regularly. I actually got in my truck a few times just to avoid a couple dust devils. The dry firing helped settle me in and I just took my time. I figure if I had to make a shot at that range I most likely wouldn’t have my pick of environmental conditions, so I made due. That rear MBUS set up has to go real soon. I’m really considering the KAC Micro 600 meter rear flip sight. The elevation adjustments will be great when I start reaching out beyond 300 meters.

I’m going to make a video of me shooting my carry handle 20 inch rifle at 560 tomorrow with XM 193!

This should be good and I am looking forward to seeing it.

I had an officer at work who had malfunction issues with her M16A1. I took it home, dismantled and thoroughly cleaned it, then lubed it up with Mobil 1.

I decided to take it up to a friends farm to check the reliability of the rifle. It ran like a Swiss watch for 200 rounds. We were shooting at a steel plate that was roughly 20"x40" at 400 yards with green/white box Remington 55g ball and getting consistent hits with a full value 10 mph wind. I did not make any sight adjustments, I just held off to compensate for windage.

We repainted the steel after every 40 rounds and counted hits on target. I thought that the XM193 would not shoot as well as it did. With XM193 we were getting hits better than 60% of the time. From the looks of the shot groups, I believe that we were at the limit of the accuracy potential at 400 yards with the XM193 on the target we were using.

It shot so well, I did not want to give the rifle back to the officer. I wanted to keep it for myself and give her my carbine. It was on loan from Uncle Sam, so I would not have been able to keep it anyway.

Hitting point targets at 400 meters is impossible with irons to effectively engage targets at that distance will require at least 15x magnification…

But really, I have experience wit engaging point targets at 500 meters with m855 out of a m4, don’t expect one shot hits but I think 20-50% hit ration isn’t abnormal. Look at national match competitions for example, they go further out with irons granted hey have match style weapons and ammo but in 99% of situations your are only limited by how well you can see the target not the effectiveness of the round and sighting systems. Magnification does not ease shitty fundementals Remeber that.

RLTW!

I have no words…

Ranger’s lead the way, huh?

I’m putting the carry handle back on my 6920.

i think he was being facetious.

Back in the day we were taught to knock down man size pop-up targets (and farther) all day at 300 meters with iron sights. It was part of qualifying. You didn’t make the grade you did it over till’ you got it right or had to take the course over again. Country boys had the edge back then too.

A friend I work with was just telling me the same thing. He and his wife are former Army. If it is a standard in the military then I want to feel unchallenged making shots liked that. You’ll notice the experienced members here frequently mention that it is very beneficial to become comfortable with working the irons. As a side effect of shooting longer distances than I am totally comfortable, shorter shots have become much easier. I can ring the hell out of that same 12 x 20 steel at 150 meters standing off hand, and I’m no expert. Far from it. It just shows the importance of finding our failure points.

If you use 77s you’ll be able to reach 500 yards consistently.
