HOLY CRAP! Talk about a tight nut!

Wow. Brand new Colt LE6920. I needed to remove the castle nut to put on a new end plate with a ring for a sling.

There is “tight” and then there is “Colt tight”. Yes, it was lightly staked in place.

Using a DPMS wrench, I put the lower in a rifle vise and went to work. It was SO tight that it broke the nub off the DPMS wrench!

I got it off okay… with a BFH and a punch! Needless to say, I ordered a new castle nut from Brownell’s. Sheesh.

If you need to do the same thing, either get yourself a better wrench that has at least 3 nubs on it (DPMS one only has 1), or buy yourself a new nut before you start. :slight_smile:

You made me smile. Yeah. Right at the moment I only have one damaged nut! Thank goodness one is in the mail. :slight_smile:

I just recently installed a Omega rail on a new 6920. I had to literally hang off of the wrench from the vice to break it loose! I don’t know what’s up with Colt lately. Maybe they are feeding their employes Wheaties lately.

Very nice! And for $119, it should be gold plated! No kidding, that’s a bit much for any stamped-out tool. I just spent $6 for a tool at Brownell’s that has a half-circle with 3 little nubs on it that should do the job. If I was a Gunsmith, I might consider $119 an investment, but for the 4 or 5 times I’ll probably use it, $6 is probably fine. True, the Hammerhead is likely a very fine tool, but I don’t need it.

Thanks for the link though - I truly do value a quality tool. I just don’t want to finance all of their R&D by buying one tool!

Ah! Didn’t see that one. That would be a realistic purchase. Thanks. i’ve collected nice gunsmithing tools for many years and I might just need one of those.

(I was looking at the prices of the Brownell’s Master set of gunsmith screwdrivers the other day and about lost it… can’t believe the prices now. I think I paid something like $75 (or less) many years ago, which was a lot back then.)

The reason your DPMS wrench broke is because that hooked part with the nub was designed for use on the older XM177 type carbines that didn’t have staking point and only had circular holes for that to lock into it.

Why stupid ass companies continue to make shit without understanding why is simply baffling.

I have a Hammerhead that I got when they first came out and it has been overseas several times and works all the time.

I put a Noveske QD end plate on my LE6920, great addition. I first spent $6 on this piece of crap:

And immediately broke the tooth off.

I next went with this one:

and it came off easy peasy lemon squeezy.

The wrench for the Daniel Defense Omega X rail fits perfectly.
3 points of contact and a 1/2" drive.

Never had to use it though.
Haven’t built a lower since I installed that rail.
