I was just wondering if anyone has any thoughts on getting the best accuracy out of the Hk91 platform? I understand they are traditionally thought of as 2+ moa rifles, but I suspect there are techniques for wringing out a little more accuracy.
Any pet loads? It is my understanding that these rifles have 1/10 twists?
Although this won’t improve mechanical accuracy, obviously a trigger job would improve practical accuracy.
Hate to link another site but www.hkpro.com has numerous threads on the issue. From my experience, upgrading the trigger pack to either the MSG or PSG unit yields good results, the factory trigger definitely has an impact on what your going to get out of this rifle in terms of consistent groups. There are also aftermarket trigger tuners like Bill Springfield that people have had great results using.
If you can find an HK91A3 or A4, they “should” have polygonal barrels. I’d have to let SteyrAug comment further, he has an extensive HK91 collection and knowledge base.
The SR9 is also an option.
There are a few aftermarket barrels but I have only read mixed results depending on the HK artist you have perform the work. I had thought about doing an MSG conversion but was shown the light by others who went down this road before me with mixed and expensive results.
Yeah, pretty much the trigger group is the only place for improvement. Williams set triggers are popular. I’d recommend buying a second group and not modifying your existing one so you have the original part for your gun and don’t harm collector value.
Keep in mind a MSG90 trigger group is designed for a swing down and will not drop in a clip and pinned trigger group. PSG1 trigger groups are remarkably expensive but perform well. Williams and Bill Springfield trigger packs are much more cost effective.
I would never replace a factory barrel with an aftermarket barrel. Keep in mind one of the of things that makes a MSG90 and a PSG1 different from the HK91/G3 is reinforcing plates welded to the receiver which keep the frame from flexing as much. Now you could have your 91 rebuilt with reinforcements, longer barrel and a PSG1 trigger group but the dirty secret of the PSG1 clone is it still doesn’t perform quite like a PSG1.
The best you can do is basically build a semi auto G3/SG1 by using a PSG1 trigger group or a set trigger. This will get you down to almost 1 MOA on average. Keep in mind G3/SG1s used selected barrels from the factory. This is about as good as the 91/G3 series gets and it isn’t practical to try and do anything else as even the PSG1 clones don’t do much better.
Bottom line is the G3/91 series isn’t meant to circumcise gnats. It is designed to be a reliable, reasonably accurate military firearm which will keep chugging along when other rifles have fouled up. Sorta halfway in the middle between the old AR15 accuracy vs. AKM reliability decision. The other factor that makes the G3/91 popular is that it is cheap to produce and for a stamped rifle the results are impressive.
So accept it for what it is and don’t try and make it into something it isn’t.
I completely agree. If I get 1-1.5 MOA from pet loads I will be completely satisfied. I am not looking for an SSG and I have no intention of turning the rifle into a PSG1 or anything like that. I just like wringing as much of the potential out of a rifle as possible.
My plan is to buy a clipped and pinned polymer lower with a separate trigger group and send it to Williams. I am not concerned about collector values (I have noticed that very few guns are really collectors items)–but I like the idea of having a spare that I know works (and they are cheap). Plus the poly lower is lighter
What I was hoping for was someone out there who had tinkered with different loads and found ones that tend to work in HK91s/G3s etc.
Sounds like you are on the right track. Quality match grade production ammo or hand loads should get you the rest of the way. I shoot mostly military stuff like Hirt so I can’t really recommend much.
