Hi all,
Picked up a new HK MR556 A4 16” last week. Liking this fit and finish a lot on this rifle , need to choose an optic for it before taking to the range. Right now as far as optics go I have only two rifles situated with optics; an LMT SBR 300blk build with a T2, and a KAC SR-15 16” with an ATACR 1-8. So first I thought I’d get another Nightforce like the NX8 for the HK but then I thought I’d like to have some variety in optics on rifles. I thought the T2 would be better suited for the SR15 and maybe add a 3x magnifier. I’d either get a PRO or maybe an Eotech for the LMT and throw the ATACR on the HK for two reasons: first it’ll be more accurate than any of my other ARs although slightly and two I always felt the 1.5” mount sat a bit too low for my taste on the SR15, and with the rail sitting I think about .4” higher on the HK it would just be a bit more natural. I personally think having different options on different rifles is a good thing, although I’ve come to like the LPVOs. My fourth AR is a Colt that has a carry handle so I just leave it as that. What do you guys think?
I suppose I’d start by asking what if any role or purpose you envision for each weapon. I realize this ain’t “tactical world” where every gun needs to fit a niche. Just asking if you have particular uses in mind.
I would also say that the NX8 is a good optic, but if you have been running the ATACR it’ might feel a little “meh” in comparison.
Now, nothing wrong with running 2 lpvos. If you want to try other options your plan sounds great. I mean it ain’t like you are committed for life. Sure we could throw out a few hundred variables to try, but nothing wrong with what you propose. Give it a shot.
As to the mount height, if 1.50 has felt low to you on the SR15, the taller rail is gonna bump that up. If it’s too much you could always try something like a 1.35. Did you ever try a 1.70 - 1.90 on the SR15?
No I never tried a different mount. The T2 is on a scalarworks 1.4” but feels better likely because it’s a true 1x with unlimited eye relief. I’m going to try out the ATACR on the HK for a better feel. I’m thinking of adding a magnifier for the SR15. Most of my shooting is out to 200 yards since that’s the farthest any range is by me. That’s another reason why more than one LPVO might be overkill for me. I like the idea of different optics for different rifles I guess. I think an eotech would be best for my 300blk.
If it was me I’d probably pick an aimpoint over eotech, but that’s my personal bias. You do you.
Just to throw some options out there, and not knowing the barrel length of your 300.
Eotech makes a 300bdc reticle, primary arms has a decent 1-6 with a 300(7.62x39) bdc.
And to get a little outside the box trijicon makes an ACOG for the 300.
ETA: Like I said, if it was me I’d just throw a PRO on the 300 and skip the bdc options.
PRO definitely an option as well. My BLK is 10.5”. I also plan to barrel swap for the 12” piston 5.56 since it’s the MRP LMT upper. I figured an EXPS3 would be a good choice but yes I do like the PRO.
