Highway Patrolman

Well, I probably shouldn’t have, but I ran across a nice 28-2 6" and it followed me home. Looks like 69 or 70 vintage, hardly shot at all, and the only mark on it is a very fine small scratch right near the cylinder release. It’s tough to see unless the light hits just right. I’ll let ya know how she runs when I get a chance. She’s a beauty.

Post some pics, would like to see it.

Outstanding! I have a 6-inch one that was my dad’s from way back in the day. Don’t shoot it much but it’s a great revolver. The 28s were the plain jane ones while the 27s were the same gun with much nicer blue and different sights. I missed out on a 4-inch one a few years ago that was stamped (NYSP) New York State Police and was bummed about it,LOL. Keep us posted & congrats.

They are fantastic revolvers. I shot mine yesterday. 158 g @1200 fps out of that revolver flattens pepper poppers quite nicely

LOL,yea good 357 loads are a hoot for sure, gotta be careful the dam flame coming out of the bbl and cylinder gap could burn the house down,LOL! But yes ya know ya got a good load when your in that area. Mine shoots great and the typical S&W trigger is awesome, especially from back then. I have a set of pachmayr grips on it but would love to find some originals just because. Great gun just the same.

Congratulations OP! Looking forward to the range report. If you do get the chance, post up some pictures too!

Congrats on a nice score and thank you for saving a piece of America. May it serve you well.

Thanks all, I’ve never had a 28 so I’m pretty stoked. It’s got a Hogue monogrip, which I like, but I’ll probably put some combats on it if I can find the N frame set I have. Hopefully I’ll get a chance to shoot it in the next couple days. I’ll get some pics up shortly, albeit cell phone pics as our old MacBook finally gave up the ghost and I’ve not replaced it. I must say, the action is very smooth on this old girl, better than my old 586 even.

Those old P&Rs have some of the nicest actions of any 20th century firearm. Here’s mine.

I have a friend who spent gobs of money on Colt Pythons. He sent one off for an action job and spent more money.

I shot those revolvers and was underwhelmed.

My Highway Patrolman is a much better weapon. Seriously one of the best wheel guns to be had

I like my Python, Colt did have really nice wheel guns, but I don’t think many things beat a vintage Smith. And honestly the last thing a Colt Python needs is an action job. Same idiots tune Series 70s until they won’t reliably feed ammo. The reason people buy old Smiths and Colts is because they really don’t need anything.

I bought a 4" Highway Patrolman new back in the early 70’s. I think I paid like $135 for it. Had it for years and then it was stolen in the early 2000’s. My son gave me another about 2 years ago. They are truly fine shooters. A little on the heavy side being an N frame but that helps with those magnum loads.

Nice pick up. Enjoy.

I love my 4" Model 28 no dash. Just a very nice shooting pistol.

^^^ That’s a beautiful revolver. My Dad gave me a 6” M28-2 when I came home from the Army and I couldn’t wear it out. I started reloading my practice ammo when I was in college and went shooting 2-3 times a week, every week, rain or shine. The LE agency I joined issued me a M28-2 6” and I shot Master with it. I carried it for ten years and then bought it when the agency went to auto pistols. I also bought a bright blue M28-2 (6”) department commemorative. I still have all three revolvers. It’s hard to go wrong with an older S&W N Frame.

The Highway Patrolman Mod 28 was my first “real” pistol. I think I paid like $125 new back in the 1970’s. Had it for years until it was stolen.
