Hi everyone, i’ve been reading this forum for a couple months now and this is my first post. I got my first m4 (and first gun, its a bushmaster lower on a stag upper) on Nov 3, day before the election because i’ve always wanted one and was afraid of availability in the future (looks like i made a good call )
So Christmas is coming up and i think santa is gonna pay a visit to larue tactical for me :D. I have one question about putting in a rail system. i want to add a REALLY long rail system and put a flip-up front sight on because i like when the rails go almost to the end of the barrel. i’m thinking like a 11". Well to get to my question, what happens with the gas tube if i do away with the front sight post? i may be wrong but from what i’ve seen it is connected to the front sight and goes back into the rifle. (sorry if its been answered somewhere else, i couldnt find anythign on it.)
Welcome to M4C! As to your question; you will reoplace the front sight tower with a low profile gas block. To make it easier for you I suggest you get one that installs with taper pins (just like your FST) and that is all there is to that. Glad to read your going with LT. thank you for the reply, i was thinking it was going to be very complicated and was considering going with the same size rails as my handguard but now i’ll be able to do what i want!! so the gas block will fit under the rail system?
Yes, the gas block will fit under the rail. LaRue has a lo-pro GB but it uses set screws (nothing wrong with that but t/pins are easier to deal with IMO) and for some that is a problem. Call Grant at G & R Tactical and see if he has anything at his shop that will work for you. If he doesnt then get with Steve over at ADCO as he tends to have a good selection of parts on hand. I would recommend chopping the exisiting FSB into a low profile configuration.
The problem with using a pinned gas block is that FSBs are drilled with their barrel, thus every one has the possibility of being slightly different than the preceeding one. While you may be lucky and have the replacement GB fit your tapers pins perfectly, there is no guarantee.
I would ask gotm4 at VA Arms and Steve at ADCO about this.
I know Robb (gotm4) does a very nice job but have no idea about his workload. Others may perform the service but I don’t know exactly who, if you are interested I am sure you will be able to find them. It is also possible to do it yourself, and IIRC the method of chopping the FSB is covered somewhere on the site, once again, if you are interested it isn’t all that hard to find.
