I am leaning hard toward an Omega on my next M4. Which hopefuly is only a few months out. What I would like to do is cut/machine off the extension that goes across the delta ring to make a monolithic rail, I prefer the looks of it with out this extension. My brother is a tool maker so I don’t think I will have any problems cutting it off but my concern is how to refinish this area once it if removed. Any suggestions?
It’s aluminum so you could easily cut it with a mill or a band saw. Then sand it flush and refinish it.
Unless you have a pinned FH, why not just get another FF handguard?
I’m planing a 6920 at this point and did not want to tear it down as I do not have the tools or experience with this. The sanding would not be a problem but I was wondering how to finish it and with what.
Id love to help, but I dont know what your talking about. Thats not your fault most likely, I dont have any experience with that rail. A pic maybe…

Here is the Omega installed. Notice the top rail extension that goes over the delta ring. This is the piece I would like to remove.
i have to ask. why are you planning on removing the rail piece? If your not looking for a connected top rail and your not afraid to go with a single FF look at LaRue.

Cheaper than the DD and equally as good of quality. I also know LaRue is filling military contracts with these rails. I don’t think the Omega is.
I don’t have the tools or experience to install a one piece such as this. I haven’t locked myself into anything just yet but the Omega has gotten many good reviews here, I just don’t like the extension on the top rail. I will consider other options before my final decision but I would like to explore this option a little more.
Use the Troy drop in instead of the Omega. It won’t be free float, but it doesn’t have the rail extension you want to remove on the Omega either. Oh yeah, it is about a $100 less also. http://www.troyind.com/MRFDI.html
That does look pretty good but how does it mount to the rifle. I already have a KAC RAS on my LMT. The harder I look into choosing my next rail the more confused I get:p
The Troy DI mounts up the same way the factory hand shields mount. Real simple…
+1. I’m not too worried about free float and I don’t really want to pay 200+ dollars for a rail at the moment. I just purchased the Troy rail (waiting delivery). I’ll send you some info on where to get it in case you decide to go that route.
Thanks Shotdown,
I trying to do my impression of a sponge right now, I need to soak up all info and options before spending money. I have about 3-4 months. I was just talking with my wife that I may want to reconsider LMT’s MRP again, I would not have to worry about rails then. I’ll figure out eventually.
Once you cut it off and sand it smooth, use one of these pens to make it black. It will blend right in.

Thanks rljatl,
I’ve added it to my favorite list, this was the kind of product I was looking for.
I have one of those. Works pretty well to cover little nicks and scratches and would work for what you want to do as well.
my suggestion might not be what you want to hear…but i would leave it alone.
i don’t understand why you want to cut off the top rail “overhang” bit?
is it just for looks? that seems pointless.
i like the Omega because its the easiest free float rail to install, its light, its solid. looks don’t really factor in. i think all rails are pretty ugly, but they are functional, so that’s why i run them.
also, the overhang has its use…you can put your optic mount a tad further up. i wouldn’t put any mount engagement surfaces in contact with the fore-end rail. nor would i “bridge” rings from the upper receiver to the rail…but if the forward edge of your mount touches the overhang bit, that’s fine. without the overhang the forward edge of the mount would just be free in space over the delta ring, it could cause a snag issue or an unwanted sharp edge - and if you’re worried about looks so much, it really wouldn’t look cool at all.
sorry this is a bad pic (cell phone), but you can see the forward edge Aimpoint mount extends past the upper receiver and on to the overhang, but its not a locking surface, so it doesn’t affect anything. the ADM mount only extends on to the overhang by a couple milimeters

here’s a closer up pic of a different weapon, different mount, but the same concept, as both uppers have DD Omegas and similarly mounted optics, but the LT mount extends on to the overhang much further. i’ve since changed things around, the ML3 is on a different rifle… but when i had it set up like that i had no issues with wandering zeros as a result of mounting the optic in such a manner.

Am I missing something here? OP doesn’t like the overhang that gives the Omega a continuous rail type look, but is instead considering the MRP? Are you gonna ask us how cut a grove into the MRP to disrupt the rail?
I like the Lite Rail and the Omega because the extra bit of rail makes it easy to line up the rail during installation. After that, I barely ever notice it. I’d just leave it. You’ll never notice it when you’re staring down the sights like you should be.
I would leave it on for a month or so. It may grow on you. After that if it still bothers you then remove it.
The overhang is 1 of the reasons i went with the omegs
This is what I’m looking for, I value other opinions. The MRP has a few things going for it and a couple I’m not thrilled with. I think I going to do more research on pros and cons of each system and wait until ‘order time’ and see what is available.
Yeah, I’ve thought of this. Will just wait myself out and decide when the time is closer. Thanks for the replys.
