Ok guys. Indulge me please. In the next week or so I am going to be picking up my 6940.
This will replace my Bushmaster as my “Go To” gun for obvious reasons.
Unlike most of my past builds/projects I want to make sure I do this right from day one. I would like input from you, the experts on what all I should plan for this gun.
Now obviously the first thing that will happen is I am going to send about 500 rounds of various makes of ammo down range to make sure she functions properly.
After that is done I want to have everything ready to go.
My plan is as follows:
VLTOR Clubfoot Modstock
Magpul MIAd Grip with an extra bolt/Firing pin.
Magpul Enhanced Trigger guard.
Replace the Matech BUIS with either a MBUS or ARMS #40
EoTech 553 (I know many people prefer the AimPoint but I am more comfortable with the EoTech and tend to shoot better with it.
Surefire 6P LED mounted in the 9 O’clock position.
Magpul XTM rail panels. (will these made the rail to wide? I have heard conflicting reports. If so I will use the ladder style that come with the gun)
This is my plan for the gun. Frankly I feel like I am missing something here but for the life of me I can’t figure it out.
As always thanks for helping me become a better shooter with the best tools possible.
I’m thinking of waiting to see how the new EOTech XPS3 does in testing. I really like the EOTech system, but have shied away from them because of the negative comments posted here and on other sites. I know (or at least hope) I will never have to use it in battle conditions, but I really do want it to be ready to!!!
I’ve never had a problem with the rail panels being too large, but it would probably depend on the size of your hands. The only other thing I would add is a VFG, something like a LaRue FUG for a reference point to pull the weapon in tighter. This may make activating the light easier for you also. As far as the trigger, if this is a fighting weapon, I wouldn’t mess with the trigger. You may also want to look at a sling, like the BFG VCAS or Magpul Dynamics new single point.
I have never been a fan of match or competition triggers in a fighting gun. Just seems to me like one more thing that can go wrong. I don’t think I will mess with the trigger group right now.
Assuming I can sell this S&W lower I am going to pick it up monday. I will get some photos up then
Looks like your 6940 will be good to go. You definitely need that MBUS to replace that Matech sight haha. Hopefully I’ll get your letter in the mail and I will have it promptly sent to you I agree stick with the stock trigger, you don’t want an aftermarket trigger shit the bed when you need it the most. What about the X300 light with a pressure switch? Or do you want to be able to dismount the light and use it as a handheld as well? As Vendetta already stated you should get a good sling, I’m very happy with my Magpul MS2 with the Noveske QD plate. But I’ve heard good things about the Vickers sling as well from Blue Force. Also how about a carrying case for this beauty?
I can easily add a single point sling adapter when I switch out the tube and stock for the VLTOR. That for the advice Kimbo. And the MO has been resent to you. Man I am sorry about that.
I think i am going to stick with the 553 I already have. I like the looks of this new one but between the cost, lower battery life, and already having a 553 I don’t know if I can justify it at this point.
Light wise I am still pretty torn. The Scout light interest me quite a bit but I want something that I can mount at about the 10:30 position on the rifle. The scout light and X300 mount at 9 O’clock.
I find that mounting it at the 10:30 position gives the rifle a better feel and it puts the cap right at my thumb so I can turn it on without even shifting my grip. But of course I am always open to suggestions.
What does everyone think of the Streamlight Super Tac? It is a bit gig but seems very light. And it is hard to argue with 135 Lumens LOL.
I have used and am currently using a Matech sight on my carbine. It works and have no issues. I say stick with it until there is an issue. Leave the stock trigger in there unless you are building a match gun. A few other thoughts.
No worries about the letter. You can get an offset mount from vltor or daniel defense for the scout. If you want a light with lumens check out Fenix. I used their P3D for Escalation of Force in Iraq for patrols and convoys. Good light, bright as hell. They have new tactical models that are even brighter.
I am sold on the Magpul sing and attachment point, I am going to order those today. Not so sure about the VFG though. I had one on a previous rifle and was never 100% comfortable with it. Maybe I was doing something wrong but I always found I was more stable with a traditional hold on the rifle.
Stock is a Clubfoot So I am good there. Although I hate having to break the staking job on the Colts receiver extension. If I can get an offset mount that will fit the Scout light then I am 100% sold on them. I love the lights, was just worried about where it would mount.
Ahh the Aimpoint… I like Aimpoints, I have no doubt inmy mind about their quality or dependability. However I am much more comfortable with the EoTech. I have 2 and neither of them have ever given me any problems. I can use both, heck I even like both, but I am more accurate and can acquire targets faster with the EoTech, that is why I wanted to stick with it.
I’m a huge fan of making it as lightweight as possible.
I would skip putting anything inside the grip unless you’re out and about with the rifle.
Skip the enhanced trigger guard unless you need the extra clearance for thick gloves.
The Surefire 6p…buy a regular one and swap out for the Malkoff LED (really nice) - don’t forget a good mount. The Larue is nice but kind of heavy. The VLTOR work okay if you locktite the hell out of it.
XTM Panels - these are just personal preference, choose whichever you like.
Just curious, but why do you need to remove the castle nut? The buttstock will come off by pulling down on the locking lever and the Vltor stock is should fit on a MILSPEC tube. Or am I missing something?
No not really missing anything. I was going to do it so I had a 5 position instead of a 4 position tube. But honestly it probably isn’t worth the effort.
I picked up my 6940 today. Normal colt quality. The rail with covers is about 2.4 inches across. A bit wider than standard M4 handguards so I decided to stick witht he ladder style covers instead of using XTM panels.
There is one thing I am really suprised about. The gun looks like it was thrown in a box with a bunch of other guns before being packaged up. There are a number of places on the barrel that look like rub marks. Nothing that will impact the performance of the gun however. This is my first colt in about 9 years and I am glad to have her.
