The piston kit is for a carbine, but would this fit the dissipator?
The gas tube and ground down gas block seem to be the same length as the carbine. I believe the only hurdle is the handguards. The kit came with modified carbine length handguards, which obviously would be too short.
Would Magpul MOE rifle-length handguards allow the piston to function under them? I do like the look of the MOE’s and if they’d work without grinding the pxxp out of them (like I did with my AR10 and a set of midlengths MOE’s), that would be pretty slick…me thinks.
Edit: One other thing I thought, could this be overgassed from the length of the barrel after the gas port? I believe it’s the same as a 16" carbine model (length and port size), but I’m wondering if anyone can confirm this.
Slap that thing together and put it on consignment at your favorite gun shop. Take the funds and buy a BCM, Colt, Daniel Defense or LMT AR. Just my two cents.
If it’s a fighting rifle, the aforementioned advise is valid. If it’s a range toy, you can do what you want to it. Weird stuff happens when you start bolting together parts on a rifle that isn’t made to mil-spec. Dissipators are tapped at the carbine location. It’s functionality will be the same as BM’s 16" carbine offerings, be it overgassed or whatever is typical on those.
Do what ever you feel will work the best. You could tame the gas down with the valve.
Sorry, these jerks don’t have a clue what you were talking about the closest they have come to a gas piston system is the stuff coming out of their axx.
I, too, agree with Cagemonkey. Piston AR’s…
The AR is an easy gun to clean… The piston is an answer for a problem that hasn’t existed since the rifle was first put into GI hands… And that was fixed with a comicbook tellin them how to clean it.
Everyone that has posted knows exactly what he is talking about.
No, they don’t and it is obvious they never have had a piston system. I am not a fan of them either and prefer a DI system also. But that is not what the OP posted, or question asked. You are just expressing a personal opinion as to the system and not answering his question.
Everyone here is capable of reading. What they read is a post by someone asking for advice to do something that is pretty silly and pointless. The advice given was good, whether or not you or the OP wanted to hear it.
If you are so versed in this, why don’t you tell him how to do it instead of insulting the experience of our members?
Jim243… don’t be so foolish in your posts… it’ll land you in time out. Smart mouths like you are not highly thought of around here.
Mr. Merrill, great write up. Funny thing… EVERY class I’ve been to where there has been a piston gun ran, one of them ended up choking. Coincidence? Nah. I always felt that the piston ar was a poor answer to a non existent problem. Want a piston gun? Buy an AK or something designed around the piston ground up.
Op… sound advice truly has been given by trustworthy sources. Follow it… unless you like putting diesel in your gasoline motor…
16 post and you have called Senior members and Site sponsors Jerks and insulted them:rolleyes:Use the search button and do a little reading yourself On the threads about piston ARs .
or Just go back to ARFCOM and the count down begins
It only takes 1 look at this AR setup to know how much experience he has with the platform. I mean, not everyone can have a Chinese scope and UTG rails.
You need to relax a little. Yes, the OP asked how to do something. But people are offering their advice about not doing it for plenty of good reasons. Bushmaster upper + retrofit piston kit= bad news.
Might I ask what “valve” you are referring to?
Personally I think that the OP is going to be in for headache with this set up he has planned.
Also in the event that you are the one with UTG rails and a Chicom knock off scope, I would have a hard time accepting any AR advice from you.
Great article. Short and sweet describes it perfectly. It’s hard to get someone sold on piston AR convo kits to read a 10 page article of why they don’t work well.
That was all the needed information - including the reasons why the DGI system isn’t “reliable” (sarcasm).
Great article though. I’ll have to read more on your site.
