Handguard retaining cap question

Hey Guys,

I have an SLR15 Commander made by Greg “Sully” Sullivan of The Defensive Edge and I am looking for a handguard retaining cap. The commander model is like a disapator style, 16 inch barrel with full length handguards. Mine as a FSB with cap for the handguards and a low profile gas block in the normal 16" spot under the handguards. A roll pin is used instead of a gas tube from the FSB to the cap. The rifle came with rifle length handguards that fit a triangle handguard retaining cap. The barrel diameter at the FSB is aprox .63" and the triangle cap hole fits perfectly.

I just got a great deal on a set of surefire rifle length handguards with the light built in, its like the M511 except its the older style that only accepts the round handguard retaining cap. I ordered a round handguard retaining cap from Brownells but the hole diameter is .75" which matches the barrel diameter on regular style 16" barrels at the FSB.

My questions is, is there such a handguard retaining cap, round, that will fit my barrel like it should with a diameter of aprox .63"? Anyone with help on where I can find one or modify one is greatly appreciated.

I can post pics if anyone would like to see them with measurements etc.

Thanks,
Dave

Call Brownells, their techs are great and if they have one that will fit in stock they will find it for you! They are always the first folks I turn to for any gun part.

Thanks Irish,

I forgot about their techs, I will give that a try tomorrow. Is anyone aware of Colts rifles that used full length hand-guards with a round cap. Evidently the surefire hand-guards I got are listed for “Colt Rifle.”

Thanks,
Dave

Just to give people an update and a source for reference I was able to find a round hand-guard cap for my barrel.

Long story short: CMMG has caps in all shapes and sizes. Care about the details, read on.

I found my good micrometer and measure my barrel at the FSB and found it to be .625" which is consistent with light barrel diameter. I made a call to Brownell’s who told me they have never heard of such a cap being round and having a hole sized at .625". While searching the web I found a post on TOS that was about a guy looking for a retro triangle cap with .625" hole, he found one at CMMG. Called CMMG and they make round (plain), M4 (with notches at 3 and 6 o’clock), and triangle caps for .75" and .625" barrels. Ordered it up and it should be here in a few days.

While I was waiting I decided to stick with the triangle cap for now and put on a Knights RAS rail system that I had lying around. Never mounted it before but for a non FF it seems pretty solid.

Thanks guys, happy shooting!

Dave
